OK, as anniversaries go it might not be on the same level
as D-Day. But in commemoration of a truly spectacular
meltdown I offer this link:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.bicycles.racing/browse_frm/thread/1e2aa7fe157c4259/44f542ab97884d0d

I notice that http://www.procyclingwomen.com/ is much
more filled out, although he doesn't yet have an entry for
roubaixgirl.

Happy stocking,

Dumbass -

A couple of questions:

#1) topical: the anger thing: are Carl and Bruce related?
#2) topical: does the book say anything about Carl's status as an rbr
dirtbag?
#3) OT: If you and your idol Carl ever meet up, make sure you demand a
reach-around.

There is something vaguely phallic about those exclamation points.

If I didn't know better, I'd say he was "really enthusiastic" but I do know
better. That's heading into "cause for concern" territory. At least he isn't doing
that strange translating then untranslating thing he was doing to disguise his
American-ness anymore (that we know of).

Snip...

http://s203.photobucket.com/albums/aa53/cyclefan_2007/

I was reading on older book for the first time the other day. It's a trackie
book called No Brakes. In it is a chapter about Carl Sundquist, and the
subject title is the Pursuit. I didn't know you were a four time national
track champion, and a five time national team pursuit champion. That is
indeed very impressive, (1985-1992). Silver medal - 1994 World Championships
in the team pursuit. Gold Medal in the Pam American games in the team
pursuit. Set a national record in the Masters team pursuit, 4000 meters. The
article said Carl grew up in Indy where a cousin of mine lives and used to
frequent the velodromes. He used to tell me a few stories from the old days
of that era.

In one of the photos, it quotes Carl as saying he used his anger in a
positive way to improve his performance, but that generating false anger was
not the same thing. He said real anger could help his performance immensely.
Also Carl credits Roger Young as the individual who helped the most in his
career, the brother of the famed speed skater and track champion Sheila
Young.

Carl says the best moment of his career was at the 1888 Olympic Team Pursuit
where he was flying, a sort of payback for Mark Hodges telling the
newspapers that Carl was too slow to make the team. Another favorite was the
points race in the 1986 Moscow Goodwill games, another one where he was
cranking, so these were personal bests it seems regardless of the outcome.

Carl's favorite track is Moscow, a huge track which he says some corners are
as much as three stories high. In America he says a toss up between Colorado
and Minneapolis.

On mental preperation, Carl says to eliminate as many variables as you can
that are out of your control, and when you do that, its makes everything
more postitive and less that might get you down, or upset you. Mentality
things go a lot smoother when you can control as many things as possible,
shaping your own destiny.

Carl states that his family had given him only mild praise, and that he
should be getting on with his life, something that so many of our parents
echo about spending a lot of time cycling, no matter if its recreational or
professional. Carl's dad is quoted as saying Carl wasted five years of his
life, and he said that's not pleasing to hear, but especially hard I am sure
when you are a national champion. My parents actually cut out and saved the
article from the first race I won, but in time, my parents echoed the same
sentiments just from even spending a lot of time doing the challenges put on
every year by organzations nationwide.

The conventional path for our parents are the tried and proven careers, in
fact the more simpler the better, like school teachers, where you can
usually stay in the same job for 30 years. But a good point Carl makes like
Breukink Parents made, is that Eric said he wanted to see what he could
achieve, and his parents let him go. Carl basically said the same thing,
that leaving the sport before seeing what he could fully accomplish at the
height of his career would leave him incomplete, and like so many pros who
have left the sport, they spend the rest of their lives in misery wondered
about if only, if only, wondering what might have been, and what records
they could have broken.

The chapter ends as it echoes these parting sentiments. While I am not a
huge fan of track, the book was interesting to read. It doesn't get high
marks by some readers at Amazon, but it's a beefy book with lots of stats in
the back.

I always thought it would be useful for field sprinting to conjure up the
fight-or-flight emotion, which is some kind of biological hormonal release.
Is that what Carl's talking about?

July's a good time to get a stocker real cheap. I even had a one but then
he ran away; hopefully the SPCA took good care of him.

You cannot account for parents. I saw Kathleen Battle's
mom in a TV documentary on Kathleen. Mom did not have a
good word to say for K. who is a world class soprano.
Only thing to be said is "They could have been worse."

Carl's parents were right, Kathleen's parents are wrong. That is because

You'll have to fight my wife for my hand.

Actually, she's the opera buff in the household; my contributions to
opera appreciation largely amount to "Magic Flute? That the one with the
dragon?" and making fun of the tubercular-opera genre.

Still more important than track, but track is more fun to watch,

Opera peaked with the Anvil song in Il Trovatore (the Triangle Song in the
Light Opera version...), but I'll be damned if the rest of it made sense.
Don Giovanni has the most relationship to cycling, or it will if Pound gets
his full set of punishments in place.

It will be worthwhile if Pound plays the father. Best I can tell, they both
go to hell.

Commendatore: I challenge you.
Don Giovanni: No, let's not.
C: You scurvy dog, you coward. Draw!
[C draws. DG draws. DG cuts out C's gizzard.]

The rest of the opera is about everybody saying that DG

Well, it's such fertile ground that many highlights can be singled
out, but I'm particularly fond of JT's "You're hurting yourself
here."

There was a Sierraman comeback/redeparture thread, a few months later,
that was almost as funny...

That thread had nearly died out before it got a second wind. It was
like it took him several days of slow burn before he went postal.

I particularly liked, "Actually I left several months ago but never

Frankly, I was annoyed. It is unfounded rants like that that give dirtbags a
bad name.

I could go on for paragraphs about how people with a low tolerance for
dirtbags and assholes really should stick to moderated groups, but ennui is
setting in already.

OK, maybe he simply lacked enough ennui.

I'm trying to summon up enough energy to plug in my daily ennui drip. I do
use a masking agent so I don't get caught though, if I can summon up the
energy to take the masking agent.
