Subject: Potrebbe essere la prima volta che un terrone vince al Giro
Terrone is a pretty nasty name to be calling someone, especially one's
self.

It refers to vermin/insects that live in the ground and come out to
steal and contaminate. It's used by some northern Italians to describe
the southerners that emigrate there. I was surprised Di Luca used it.

I think the term has lost some of its sting lately, although I
certainly wouldn't recommend using it unless you are from southern
Italy yourself.

I've never heard that, and wikipedia doesn't agree with you:
