Okay so perhaps I have become a little jaded, and I now consider any
day that a GC contender loses more than a handful of seconds to a
rival, as a bad day for that GC contender.

I was thinking in particular of Stage 17 where Di Luca lost 32
seconds to Schleck and 51 seconds to Simoni.

If Di Luca was comfortable with Schleck getting that time, I have a
feeling it may well be the last time anyone lets Andy get time on them
by their own choice.

General classification after stage 16

1 Danilo Di Luca (Ita) Liquigas
73.43.12
2 Eddy Mazzoleni (Ita)
Astana 1.51
3 Andy Schleck (Lux) Team
CSC 2.56
4 Gilberto Simoni (Ita) Saunier Duval -
Prodir 3.19

General classification after stage 17

Liquigas 77.35.35
2 Andy Schleck (Lux) Team

Well... Dekker remains on the list for me.

Someone else mentioned him, but I think that Evans needs to be taken
seriously. He almost matched Moreau in the mountains, was in sight of
Vino on the TT and, has enough experience in three week GTs to have
learned not to peak too early.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the possibility of no one rider or
team dominating. Even Di Luca had his bad days in the Giro, he just
managed them exceptionaly well.

Oh and how can this list be made without including someone from CSC.
Sastre is a good bet for the podium too.

Michael.

Sastre will not be a factor. Cadel will be. Moreau is going to be hard to
beat this year I'd think. Kloden will also be a problem but I think that
Vino is going to be his own worst enemy.

Schleck (the older) looks like a reasonable dark horse for a podium as
well. Maybe next year both Schleck's can do the tour; I wonder if two
brothers have ever finished on the podium in the tour.

Exactly. Levi can rock the Amgen TdC and Copperopowhatever, but he
just isn't in the same league as guys like Vino and Christophe when it
comes to three hard weeks in France in July.

Kloden will probably limp to a top 5 spot, too, but he'll do it all on
his own as every other member of Astana will be there for Vino. Also,
keep an eye on one Chris Horner -- I'm betting he's good for at least

Ow that is too bad:(

"Wat goed is komt snel!" was exactly why I put him up on the favorites
list.

He is a chrono specialist with good climbing skills... so he could
become a winner. Most winners do extremely well during their first
(serious) TdF, so I ranked him up there.

Okay, that is news for me and revises my calculations.

On "Wat goed is komt snel!" , that was exactly my reasoning. The truly
great get on the TdF podium the first (serious) attempt. And I think
Dekker has the potential markings neccesary for becoming a TdF winner:
Chrono skills+Decent climber. Usually the tour winner also wins the
Chronos.

I would add Kloden to the list. I would take Decker off the list. Levi
seems to be a serious contender, not an outsider, I would remove
Contador due to lack of experience. I would maybe even add Evans to
the list.

Right. A long piece in yesterday's NRC about his prospects and
troubles. He was suffering from pain somewhere in his hip ever since
an organizer's motobike rode into the peloton and crashed him in the
Tirreno. Apparantly the TdS is his first race after a long period of
rest and healing. Romandie came inbetween and caused a setback.

He's not sure of his chances of getting on the Tour squad. If he does
make it, it will be his first Tour and a learning year, especially in
light of the preseason. Too bad. "Wat goed is komt snel!" On the other
hand, he's young enough to go for the white jersey next year still.

The only change I'd make is that I'm expecting Moreau to be on the podium
and wouldn't be all that surprised to see him win the Tour. That would
REALLY knock out the French anti-dopers. They'd proclaim that Frenchmen won
all of the previous Tours since they were the only clean one's - Anquetil
and Richard Virenque? Oh, and of course Pascal Lino.

Sorry, but I will eat my (racing) shoes if Moreau wins the TdF. In
fact, I would be stunned if he ends up on the podium.

He wont win a TT and he will loose time in the mountains: So in
general he is not a real candidate.

1. Vinokourov: The only challenger of Lance Armstrong who is still
active. Has the Vuelta under his belt and is showing form. That he
dropped a lot of time in the mountains of the Dauphine doesn't matter,
it could very well be part of his build-up traject not to go to deep

2. Thomas Dekker: Extremely impressive in Romandie where he dropped
Savoldelli on a not so steep climb, something wich should suit
Savoldelli. He has very good TT skills.
3. Alejandro Valverde: I am hard pressed to choose between him or
Contador. But Valverde is a tad older and more experienced.

Outsiders:

Contador: Young and upcoming. Has TT and climbing potential.
Levi Leipheimer: Got the climbing skills and a decent enough TT. So
far always had a (very) bad day

I am betting my money on one of these 5 ^^
