Jellyfish alert! Painful day in the open water

Some quotes:

The 10k took on added significance because it will be part of the
swimming program in Beijing, where open water makes its Olympic debut
next year.
"It has become more important, especially in the coaches' eyes,"
Patten said. "They see it's an Olympic event, so they're pushing their
swimmers into open water more than they did before."

But Maurer was bitter about the aggressive tactics of some swimmers.
This sport can resemble a wet version of roller derby when they're
battling for position in the great, big ocean.
"Everyone was just beating each other up," Maurer said. "I have
never experienced such a race before. It was horrible."

You've got to be freakin' kidding me. Why not just go with Olympic
Naked Rollerball.

So, essentially you're saying that we really didn't need track racing
at the Olympics afterall. Progress is progress.

No ... They cut track events for BMX.

They probably cut some other event for this.

Not unlike what happened to triathlon when it became an olympic sport. It
was modified (to my thoughts, grossly so - laps, drafting) to make it
spectator friendly.

As a triathlete, and a large one (tall and fat) the mass swim start was the
only time I could get the better of those skinny little guys that win. When
they got aggressive during the swim for position to a bouy and I was the one
they got aggressive with...well it was about as pretty as them smiling at me
as they climbed by me going up a hill....

Like Kurgan said, it's about spectacle I guess, at least for what are
niche sports. It's just sad that cycling has landed there after a
century of being important, at least in Europe.
As for those white suited, sea going, taxi drivers, you got to cut
them some slack, they get the real people where they need to go. ;-)

dumbass,

that's definately the current sentiment in track racing, particularly
in world cups. they've eliminated pursuit rounds and revised the rules
of the points race to make it more spectator friendly.

Dumbass -

To the average sports fan that is way more interesting than something
like the kilo.

That's what the Olympics is about. Drama. It's not for hardcore sports
fans and hardcore sports fans shouldn't get pissed off that the
Olympics isn't what they want it to be.

thanks,

K. Gringioni.

I'm guessing that it isn't going to last, unless they have enough
underwater cameras to show a lot of the alleged violence. Squid
wrestling would stand a better chance, as long as they're real squids
and not a bunch of drunks in white uniforms.
