... unless they were prepared in an English pub. My French is less than perfect, I confess. But, acknowledging Virenque and l'affaire Festina, French cycling has not been producing sufficient panache and puissance through the heydey of le dopage to be considered a serious player in the Doped Games. I think you have to accept that France has never taken doping sufficiently seriously. While there may have been the occasional amateur tinkerer in the peleton Francais, for serious and creative doping you need to look to northern Europe and its diaspora. Those ruthlessly efficient sausage-eating boche, for example, have clearly had more than just blut in their blutwurst, while Tin-Tin and Maigret studiously avoided investigating le pot belge. And when it comes to Perfidious Albion - that nation of chemists' shop keepers - and her colonial cousins... these are the champions du dopage. Can it be coincidence that, since the rise of EPO, every single winner of le Tour has come from the wrong side of the Rhine or of the sea? -- simon@jasmine.org.uk (Simon Brooke) http://www.jasmine.org.uk/~simon/ ' ' <------- this blank intentionally spaced left
