The UCI can refuse to send commissioners to the Paris-Nice but the
federations of France, Italy, Spain and Belgium have said they are
prepared to help the ASO with the race organisation.
(/cite)

Looks like the UCI lost, unless it wants to sanction all the
'Heartland' governing bodies

In which case they will just form their own Federation

The UCI thought it was enough to get the teams on board with promises
of guaranteed race entries. It's a three-way game of chicken, and
they're all headed over the cliff.

Three cameras and a helicopter and it may be the best event pro
cycling has to offer this year.

Throw in Pound going over the cliff first, I'll pay extra. Maybe 15.00
U.S.

Now if they'll just put the rest of the important cycling stuff on
Court TV, we'll be good to go.

Time for the UCI to get spanked, the riders to organize for real, and
become players in the sport like they are here in other sports in the
States. Seperation of power, and checks and balances work for me.

I hate to see Humpty Dumpty take the Great Fall especially with all
the other dopage/sponsorship problems the sport is currently suffering

However, the UCI has been increasingly erratic and dictatorial over
the last five+ years and something had to give sooner or later

The ProTour was a recipe for disaster from the word go, and why
Verbruggen/McBoggy persisted with it in the face of so much opposition
beats me

Yes pretty much. The ASO/RCS etc. is the party that finds the money
for all the hotels and barriers and trophy girls etc. etc. The UCI
isn't bringing anything to the table, so it' not surprising they don't
have any leverage in any negotiation.

dumbass,

the immediate risk is that the riders can be suspended, jeopardizing
their participation in the rest of the calendar. the ASO (and the
coalition of organizers) though can guarantee teams admission to their
races in advance - as they did to astana. because that's all they
want.

i've said it before the UCI, doesn't serve a purpose for the europro
side of the sport.

These events make up a lot of calendar days of racing:

Paris-Nice 8 days
Paris Roubaix 1 day
Fleche-Wallonne 1 day
L-B-L 1 day
Paris Tours 1 day
Tour de France 21 days
Giro di Italia 21 days
Vuelta a Espana 21 days
Tirreno-Adriatico 7 days
Milan-San Remo 1 day
Tour of Lombardy 1 day

Plus the non Pro-Tour races organized by the ASO:

Criterium International 2 days
Tour de Picardie 3 days
Tour of Qatar 5 days

That's almost 100 days of racing right there, plus whatever other races not
listed here that the Giro and Vuelta organizers put on.

Precisely

And I think for ASO also there's Faso, Avenir, Etape du Tour,
Picardie and DOHA if memory serves me right

And if the lads need something to fill in a day or two, there's always
a kermesse or two going on somewhere handy
