Subject: What bike to buy??
I'm newer to cycling. We have a new director at our YMCA and he's big into
cycling and therefore I've jumped on board. We've been "spinning" all
winter and we've even scheduled a Triathlon this summer.

I'm looking for a bike (actually my 2nd)and I have a local bike shop that
I'm drawn too. They offer Fuji, Jamis and Schwinn. The shop owner is
riding a 06' Schwinn Peloton (it's my size) and he's offering me a good
deal on it (I think, below $1000). According to him it has around 500
miles on it. I just can't seem to find much info/reviews of the bike
other then the one in bicycle Mag. that talks about the Peloton Pro.

I'm just looking for some help or insight to this bike. Seems that any
other brand that offers full carbon is at $2000+. I appreciate any and
all insight.

Thanks!

Since this newsgroup is restricted to bicycle racing only, I am
required to give you information
only related to bicycle racing. You can find standings of the various
bicycle frame and component
manufacturers according to racing results on this page: http://

Do you fit, well, on this particular "used" bike? Has it been crashed?
At your "level" it's not the bike that makes you "slow." Or me,
either. OK, in my cause it IS the bike that makes me "slow," but
really it's bringing out my greatest potential to be slow (Trek 520
with Mavic A719 rims, front chainrings respeced to 48/38/26 from the
stock 52/42/30). Alternately, in open road events (brevet rides), I've
seen some "Fast" people riding carbon, some riding alu, some riding
steel. But they're riding. That's the important thing.

you want aluminum frame with shimano 105 or ultegra components (sora
is the
bare mininum but i had this stuff on a cross bike and it wasn't so
great), with decent wheels.
buy nicer wheels later to race on or for important group rides or
whatever.
if you really get into it the sport, sell this bike and buy something
nicer and
stiffer, lighter and/or more aero, right now the schwinn
pro peloton for say $800 would be perfect if it has 105 or
ultegra group and the wheels are mavic and NOT ALEX rims...
don't spend more than 1200 on a first serious bike, if you are serious
about it,
you have many years to spend many many dollars on cycling.
you can sell the $800 schwinn for $400 in a year or so when you've
realized
how serious you are about cycling.
giant makes the TCR line still right? this was a pretty good
economical line of
bikes if you want something other than the schwinn.
I've raced a $2k litespeed and a $50 aluminum 6000 series frame and
they both
seemed stiff and fast to me.

thanks for the response. The bike has all 105 componets which is what my
friend that is helping has suggested as well. Nothing below the 105.

The thought that I could get a carbon fiber bike that is in the top of the
line that Schwinn makes interest me. Just been hard to find as much info
on this particular bike. Thanks again!

This really isn't the group for product reviews -- that's
rec.bicycles.ketplace or rec.bicycles.tech. However, I'd check here:

What are the reasons you're drawn to this particular shop? Are they known
for good service and expertise at fitting people? The bikes they sell are
all known as "2nd tier" bikes in the industry, which isn't necessarily a bad
thing, but rather unusual that a shop wouldn't have even one of the
more-popular lines (Trek, Specialized or Giant come to mind). Has the shop
been around very long? Could be that they haven't yet established enough
credit for the big guys, or could be he just doesn't want to deal with the
major players (who are much more demanding in terms of how much product you
buy, how it's displayed, etc... some would rather not be told what to do).

Carbon fiber is just a material, not a bike. You can make great bikes out of
steel, aluminum or carbon-fiber. At a given price range, especially in the
lower price ranges, a bike made from a different material might be better
than one from carbon fiber. In other words, there are reasons why you don't
see lots of cheap carbon fiber bicycles. You can do it right or you can do
it cheap, but you can't have both.

New at this and in reviewing your message noticed that there was more to
your response.

Why am I drawn to this bike shop. First, I'm dealing with the, owner
which I like. Yes, he's offered a full fitting for me should I choose to
go with one of his bikes. 2nd, he's just let me look and has not tried to
"steer" me toward one bike or another, he's just made suggestions. The
shop itself has been around for years however, he has just taken over as
owner. (if that make any sense) Lastly, seems to be more of a personal
touch to his shop as opposed to the "big shops" I've been in. That kind
of appeals to me also.

By the way, I've looked at Giant and Trek..........a couple of
Cannondale's

Thanks again I really appreciate your view.

What is your personal opinion of the new Schwinn bikes?
