Several teams, most notably Discovery, are making black prominent in
their 2007 jersey designs:

http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com/Peloton/teams.html

Discovery, Navigators, and Priority Health each have most of their
jersey fronts devoted to black, with AMD/US National and Health Net
using it relatively strongly.

My attempts to introduce black into a team I was with when living in
Texas was met with resistance, first for claims it would be too hot,
then for safety for riding at dusk. The safety factor is a good one,
but I wonder at the quantitative effect of dark jerseys in the heat.

Polar Bears, Jobst Brandt informed me of yesterday, have black skin.

Those Disco jerseys look okay, but I'm a bit old-school. I like the
almost retro style of the Quick-Step and T-Mobile jerseys. Though
magenta continues to be a hard colour for me to wrap my head around,
even after helping a friend build up a team-colours TCR.

The Gerolsteiner jersey has a nice colourway, and I'm fond of the argyle
Slipstream jersey, but the Navigators jersey, graphically, is a bit of a
mess.

I suspect there's something to the heat issue. The heat difference might
not be enough for a big performance gain, but I suspect it is enough to
distract.

> Polar Bears, Jobst Brandt informed me of yesterday, have black skin.

Well, they have black skin underneath a lot of light-reflecting, heat
absorbing fur. At a random guess, they need the melanin content during
the sunset-less summers.

My club has added black accents with a dark grey counterprint to last
year's red (with white accents) unis.

The effect was inspired by (but not imitative of) this Cyclocross World
jersey:

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/cyclocrossworld_1929_32947

Ours are also by LG, and that's Lyne Bessette on the podium, I believe.

I like all the jerseys, oddly enough. Discovery does
not fit easily on the horizontal; so they put it
vertical and made it work. Toyota United is blue
collar. Quickstep and T-Mobile also classic. BMC has
the fastest jersey.

Dark versus light clothing can change the ambient temperature by 2-3C.
This is a substantial difference. Presumably, for alternating colors,
it is proportional to the relative fill factor.

I like the black. The opposite was when we were designing clothing one year
the resistence was against other colors that were not black(er) or dark
enough. Specifically the shorts. It was the old "I need somewhere to wipe my
greasy hands!"

Dry or wet? We went with a dark gray that sorta handles both but does
neither perfectly.

Dark gray? What are these, low-observability jerseys?

Actually a few years ago Rocky Mountain did an MTB team jersey with an
autumn-colours camo background. I think a jersey using the new "digital
camo" style might look quite nifty.

There was camo gray uniforms for some road team in New England for a
few years. Ugly.

They're ripping off my team

And Disco ripped off the basic layout of my old team's jerseys with
the big circle and the vertical writing:

I don't like my current jerseys for riding at dusk/in the dark.

and apparently they (polar bears, that is) know that when they lie flat
in the snow, the only thing visible is their nose. When lying in wait
for a snow hare to come close enough to catch, they'll cover their nose
with a paw, so that they're completely invisible to the hare.

It's the arctic version of the comb-over. Except in the case of polar
bears it kinda works.

So do a lot of native Africans. The pigment of polar bears skin may have
little to do with heat absorption. Interestingly, polar bears have
essentially zero infrared signature except for their breath and farts.

This is to reduce the danger from the polar bear's only natural
predator, pit vipers.

I kid. It's probably a consequence of heat being a scarce commodity, and
not something the polar bear would give up easily.
