Subject: epic stage 3 in TOC
prologue: the Tour decides supporting so many of SF's finest isn't in it's financial best interest, and goes south for an easy-to-run course in Palo Alto. Nice viewing ops, with plenty of time to walk the entire route.
stage 1: same as last year
stage 2: same as last year. Watch those Botts dots.
stage 3: serious upgrade from last year: through Patterson, Del Puerto Canyon Road (steep climb) to the junction, San Antonio Valley Road (quite steep) to Mt Hamilton summit, 4200 feet of descending over 19 miles into San Jose, short jaunt on Piedmont, 1900 vertical feet with extended 10% grades on Sierra Road, technical descent of Felter Road, run-in into San Jose. It's too bad about that long run-in, but the addition of a second 1st category climb (replacing Patterson Pass) is going to be really interesting. Expect plenty of HD. I've ridden all of these roads west of Patterson.
stage 4-6: basically the same
stage 7: big upgrade, but the finishing circuits will neutralize the mountain pass

Tom,

I didn't call Roll a liar. I merely suggested that, as a reason why
Hampsten doesn't mention him, that perhaps he (Roll) tells the story
differently than how Hampsten remembers it. Maybe its Hampsten who's
memory is faulty. I don't know. Surely you can appreciate how some
memories, especially memories of epic events, grow with age. Sort of
like the old adage, 'the older I get, the faster I was.' FWIW, if you
didn't see the humor in my final paragraph, you really should relax a
bit. Not only was I poking fun at Roll, I was providing a bit of
absurd proof that perhaps I DO have something against Roll. As if his
pronounciation of TdF is really that big a deal. C'mon, man, lighten
up.

Consider this - the cars couldn't go through that storm. They had to take a
detour. So, if you READ what Hampsten wrote about getting all wet and not
having any warm clothing until he got them from the team car you have to
wonder HOW he got them from a team car that wasn't allowed on the Stelvio.

I suggest that you're an argumentative idiot. I don't give half a
damn about Roll, or Hampsten, or why Hampsten doesn't give more props
to Roll, or whatever.

You first mentioned your concern over Hampsten not mentioning Roll
when he speaks of that day on the Gavia. I merely mentioned it may
not be the case that the events of the day happened quite the way Roll
recalls them. Maybe the events played out exactly the way Roll
recalls them. Perhaps its a case of your memory of the way Roll
recalls them that's hazy. I don't know. I don't care.

I damn sure don't mean to belittle Roll and certainly wouldn't have
ulterior motives for doing so. If I cared half a rat fart about Bob
Roll and thought it necessary to belittle him, I'd be perfectly clear
on my motives. The fact is, I don't care about Roll and I'm not
belittling him.

Okay, wait... in all honesty, I am peeved by his incessant
mispronounciation of Tour DAY France, which may have been funny to
some when he first did it, but which has long worn out any humor value
it ever had.

True. Roll finished the stage. Doesn't mean he was as instrumental
in delivering clothing to Hampsten as he leads folks to believe. Ask
yourself, considering Hampsten's well-deserved reputation as a climber
and Roll's not so great climbing prowess, how did Roll climb UP to
Hampsten to bring him clothing? Wouldn't it have been easier to leave
the clothing in the team car and have them deliver it to him?

Ask yourself how Bob Roll held most of the hill climb records around
California including a VERY competitive Mt. Diablo record that stood for a
decade or more.

I suggest that you have some ulterior motive for trying to belittle Roll.

Well, since the only time you hear mention of Roll bringing warm
clothes up to Hampsten is when ROLL himself tells the story, maybe
he's not remembering it the way Hampsten and everyone else remembers
it. It may not be as much a 'fact' as Roll would have us believe.

One thing that I find incredibly urksome about Andy is that he never
mentions the fact that Bob Roll brought him up the warm clothes -
actually running him down on the climb up the Gavia and that Bob was
one of the very few actual finishers of that stage.

I always wonder if Andy and he had some sort of disagreement that
caused Andy to never mention him. Hell, Lance mentioned Roll!

Not to put too fine a point on things, but Hampsten didn't win that
day on the Gavia. That honor goes to E.Bruekink. Hampstend did
effectively win the Giro that day, though.

Personally, I thought that chase (not sure if it was this year or 2006) into
SJ was pretty exciting. Now the descent down the Hamilton will be crazy even
though it's a ways from the finish.

You may be right, but I wouldn't be surprised if the total climbing in stage
7 is more than stage 3 or at least close to it. I've ridden a lot of those
roads between Santa Clarita and Angeles Crest and there are quite a few ups
and downs... it's not just a single pass.

Snow or not the sport could use some more epic stages, not as epic as=20
the Gavia perhaps but something that represents the side of the sport=20
that isn't generated by computer, wind tunnel or lab.

This has always been the "obvious" route for a challenging stage in
Northern California, but the February date sometimes makes it iffy.
I've had an end-of-April ride up Hamilton from that side side
shortened due to snow. OTOH, it could set the stage for a fabulous win

This thread makes me miss the days when RBR was about bike racing.

Will it actually be that I should look forward to July and the Tour of
France newbie posting spike?

It's not just the newbies that create the traditional TdF posting spike
though. Quite a few of the grizzled vets spend a lot more time on RBR at
that time of year than normal, probably because they have other priorities
that keep them from spending too much time here, but the 'Tour is the 'Tour,
after all. It's that 3-week period of time that your wife can just barely
tolerate nearly every single conversation that you want to have be about
cycling, because she knows it's stupid to think it could be otherwise. You
couldn't stretch that out to the full calendar of racing, nor is it as easy
to focus on a "lesser" event, because being a 'Tour widow is something she
can actually tell non-cycling friends, and have a chance of some degree of
understanding.

Not that I'm speaking for personal experience here...
