Don't the hacks at cyclingnews know the difference between a trophy
and a cowbell?

Nominated for obscure, yet on topic, reference of the month.

"I'd be doing myself and this band a disservice if I didn't play the
hell out of this cowbell."

A trophy can be anything, and that's how it reads in the dictionary.

tro=B7phy / tro fi/ -noun, plural -phies.
1=2E anything taken in war, hunting, competition, etc., esp. when
preserved as a memento; spoil, prize, or award.
2=2E anything serving as a token or evidence of victory, valor, skill,
etc.
3=2E a carving, painting, or other representation of objects associated
with or symbolic of victory or achievement.
4=2E any memento or memorial.

If you have a bone to pick with CN, you don't need a reason to heap on
the abuse. Just let it rip. Reasoning is antithetical to Usenet.
