From cyclingnews report on the 17th stage of the giro "At one point Leo told me to stop pulling, so he could work for me," noted Simoni standing next to his teammate. The two-time Giro winner worked with Piepoli and young Schleck up the gradients to put race leader Di Luca into difficulty. The Saunier duo was not able to make the distance and it then decided to focus on the stage victory. -- To me this seems to be saying Pieopli told Simoni to slow down so he could lead to save Simoni energy? for what?

In case of a late attack from Di Luca with Simoni now flat as a pancake. If you look at the time separations, Di Luca was already closing on them at that point. This has really been a great Giro.
