Well I finally learned how to filter messages in Outlook Express. I have setup two rules. One of them deletes messages from a specific person. The other one deletes messages about a specific person. Note to specific person (you know who you are): Don't bother responding. I won't see the response. My apology to this group for being an active participant in the discussions for so long. I enjoy a good political or philosophical discussion but in order to have one you need a sane human being on the other side. I am a pretty far left liberal and I have some great friends that are pretty far right conservatives. All of them are sane, however. If this generates a return rant from a certain person then I apologize yet again. BTW I am not mentioning his name or my own message would be "kill filed" from me. This is the last message you will see from me regarding this person. If anyone uses OE and needs help setting up rules I would be happy to help you. I have finally had enough. Regards, Jeff

Gang, Some of this shit is getting through my filter by failing to mention his holiness' name. I did not mean to create yet another vehicle for him to use to rant and rave but it seems he will take any opportunity presented. I implore you as I have been implored in the past, DON'T FEED THE TROLL. He won't disappear overnight. History has shown us that he will create topics about himself and then respond to his own postings. It is not hard to set up filters which will keep this from ever reaching your door, however. Finally if he gets no response, he will move on. Please just leave him alone. I know his views are so warped that you can't help but respond but please understand the following: 1. You can't influence or change him. 2. You can't even get him to listen to an opinion that isn't his. Please don't feed the troll. If you must, please mention by name in your post. You can do this most easily by quoting his post and leaving in the part that says "....." wrote or however your news reader quotes. Many thanks, Jeff PS to the great one who I know is an active participant in this thread. Obviously we on the left fuck like bunnies. We have much better looking women on the left. As manly men we are designed and built to be attracted to them. When they consent to be with us, it isn't that we are bragging but mere exclaiming about how good this god-created experience is. Even the women of the left who wouldn't be attractive by our current social standard are wonderful people and fantastic lovers. This makes them equally attractive to those who possess physical beauty as an attribute. We men of the left can only hope that we are as good to them as they are to us. We fuck over here because the fucking is good. All things considered, please stay over there. I wouldn't want you to contaminate our gene pool. [newsgroups trimmed] "Jeff Grippe" <jeff@door7.com > wrote > I implore you as I have been implored in the past, > DON'T FEED THE TROLL. Actually, don't rise or descend to the bait. As many people point out, one can filter, either by choosing which topics and messages to read "manually" or by automating the process with filters. Both work, the later reduces clutter and temptation, dramatically. Effective as filtering, manual or automated is, the curb appeal of a newsgroup is not determined by these. The curb-appeal or repel of ARBR is and has been for some time dominated by off-topic and often insulting, abusive, and not infrequently vulgar and obscene posts. Imagine coming to ARBR for the first time, not knowing who/what to ignore. That's the curb-appeal or not-appeal factor. In the end, it doesn't matter whether trollers actually believe what they write or are simply posing. But if it helps to realize that you cannot change a seemingly racist, bigoted, even unbalanced posters' minds by either responding in measured logical ways or responding in equally abusive form, then do what it takes to come to that conclusion. If it helps to realize they may be simply trying to push your buttons and promote themselves by any attention and response, then consider that. USENET newsgroups are communities. We are what we post. All posts are trolls. Want more posts like Ed's? Respond to him, take his bait. Bait him. By all means, "engage" him. Want a different appeal for ARBR? Post more messages like you want to see. Respond, bait, engage *positively*. Ignore the negative baiting and take pride in doing so, but don't expect it to go away any time soon. Jon Meinecke

At this point I have his last name filtered from "From", "Subject" and "Message". Unless they come out with a recumbent by that name, I won't be missing anything. Regarding not taking the bait, I was just a bit slower than I should have been. I finally realized that actual dialog was impossible and that I would simply perfer not to see anything from him. Even his on-topic posts can be unpleasent. I don't care about the language the people use and I don't mind a wide variety of opinion. I also am free to change my opinion when I decide to. For quite a while I said that everyone is welcome here and that his contribution was important. As far as I'm concerned he can do whatever he wants but I don't have to read it. It isn't like he is going to say anything new. There is no real dialog. I've had conversations (electronically) with people of faith who, when it came down to "this is what I believe", simply made that statement without putting down the people who believe differently. Maybe that type of person is rare. I don't know. In any case, at this point, I am free from his rants. Nope, you got that totally wrong. riage is of the essence. Without that, everything else is an abomination. I do not want to get into the sociology of the family, but it is the most important thing of all. I am definitely against bringing bastards into the world. Hells Bells, there are already enough bastards on these newsgoups, otherwise known as ARBR and RBM. But Jim is right about one thing. When I refer to someone as a fornicator, I am not being complementary. I mean to put down such conduct for what it is. It is not sanctioned by traditional society nor traditional morality. Sex within riage is one thing, outside of riage it is another. Anyone who boasts about their sexual prowess outside of riage will get a rejoinder from the Great Ed Dolan. I do not suffer fools lightly and there are many names for those who violate the norms of society. I will use them and you will not like them. Well, I have been having enough of liberals like Jeff Grippe most of my life. In my long lost youth I was ignorant enough to have certain liberal views myself, but I outgrew them. Poor Jeff never did. If Jeff or anyone else comes on these newsgroups and espouses liberal views, they are going to hear fom me. How reasonable and rational the discussion will be depends on how far left your views are. If you, like Jeff, think late term abortions are just fine, then I am going to go ballistic and no words will be spared to describe you and your noxious view. Jeff was very far left on most of his social and political views so that no rational discussion was possible. I always regarded him as a nut case and wanted to beat him over the head. You can be a liberal, but you cannot be far left. If you are, I will not only go ballistic, but I will go into orbit. If you are far left, then get the f*** out of this country. Maybe go to freaking Canada, or better yet, freaking France. Yea, that is where you belong, in the land of eternal treason to Western Civilization. Well, ED, you're the one who has claimed to be highly intelligent and educated, and also claimed to be a "man of the world". If you were the former, you would know that you're certainly not the latter. FWIW, a "man of the world" is an idiomatic expression, meaning "someone who has a lot of experience of life, and is not usually shocked by the way people behave." You clearly lack experience in many important areas of life (women, sex, social skills, etc.), and you are continually shocked and disgusted by common forms of behavior...so, by any rational analysis, you're not a "man of the world". Your non-responsiveness, repetition, and snipping of the subject matter prove yet again that you are a lightweight and an idiot. But, just so we have our facts straight, you're the one who claimed to be educated *and* a "man of the world". Clearly, both of those claims are untrue. An educated person would know the definition of a "man of the world", and your stated aversion to sexuality rules you out as being a "man of the world". > > > You clearly lack experience in many important areas of life (women, sex, > > social skills, etc.), and you are continually shocked and disgusted by > > common forms of behavior...so, by any rational analysis, you're not a "man > > of the world". > > "A shameless fornicator who boasts of it on a public forum is hardly my > idea of a man of the world, but maybe that is what liberals think is just > fine > and dandy." - Ed Dolan > > By the way, I have traveled extensively all over the world and I have > encountered no cultures where it is acceptable to boast about one's sexual > prowess in public. Sex is a natural form of human activity and emotional and physical expression. That you are so afraid of it ks you as aberrant. > Sex outside of riage is universally condemned and excoriated. I merely pointed out the common definition* of the expression, and noted that you cannot be considered to fall within that definition. You claim to be educated, so you should know better than to use the "you have your definition and I have mine" argument. Words have meanings, as you should know, and you can't alter them just to try and avoid looking stupid (again). * A "man of the world" is an idiomatic expression, meaning "someone who has a lot of experience of life, and is not usually shocked by the way people behave." > [...] > > >> By the way, I have traveled extensively all over the world and I have > >> encountered no cultures where it is acceptable to boast about one's > >> sexual > >> prowess in public. [...] Screw that definition! A man of the world is someone who has some sophistication. It has absolutely nothing to do with approving immorality. The village idiot has no sophistication and is therefore not a man of the world. Someone who has been to most of the capitals of Europe and enjoyed various cultural events has some sophistication and is therefore a man of the world. I am such a man and I heartily condemn all immorality. Therefore, there is something wrong with your definition. Elementary, my dear Watson! Well a certain racist, sexist, very frequent poster has finally demonstrated in one of his recent postings that he is clearly on the other side of sanity. If there is no hope of a rational discussion then I don't need to have the discussion. I also don't need to read racist and sexist drivel. So my filter is in place. There could be 50 replies from said person and I wouldn't see any of them. I also don't have to see his postings about what a wonderful and saintly human being he considers himself to be. Well I tend to agree with you in general. I see no reason for some of the things that get posted to some newsgroups. But mostly I just use an adaptive filter, the human mind. I find it works just as good or better than technical filters. Besides sometimes people who post dribble also post things I consider worth reading and wouldn't want to miss those posts. I tried that approach for a good long time and the evidence is there to see. I don't even mind the NG going off topic but I have reached my limit with one individual in particular. In this one case, I'm not worried about missing anything important and I'm sure the volumes that I am missing are better off missed. Jeff "Ken C. Will anyone on these newsgroups miss Jeff Grippe if he were to drop dead? Hardly! He is nothing if not a walking paradigm of every liberal nostrum that has ever failed in the past century. But he is a fool if he thinks he can now say anything that flits into his dunderhead without getting a riposte from the Great One.
