Subject: Can I clear coat a raw steel fork instead of painting it?
|
Hello bent friends, I just had a new fork built for my bike out of steel. I really like the way it looks in it's raw state. Can I just spray paint it with a clear coat(out of a can)instead of a colored spray paint? Will that keep it protected from rusting like spray paint does?? Thank you for any help with this! Anj

I did this with a frame section sanded down to bare metal. It did a poor job of preventing rust. (I did not apply wax as another post suggested.)

I did clear powdercoat on some aircraft engine parts last year. Did valve covers, windage tubes, induction tubes. Worked well, was much easier to apply than paint. rideabike66@hotmail.com wrote: > Hello bent friends, > > I just had a new fork built for my bike out of steel. My memory is faulty, also.

"Clearcoat" paints tend to be porous, and you might end up with rust spots under the paint. Wax will seal up everything. That being said- I have a head lug that I brazed to a couple chunks of tube a couple years back when Match was giving factory tours. I brought it home and clearcoated it- it still looks fine. Of course, it never goes outside, either. Jeff
