Subject: Cycling in naure and the wilderness
|
Chris Foster is one of the most interesting defenders of mountain bikers. He is a Ph.D in electrical engineering so that means he is not stupid like most of them are. When I was in my 30's I hiked and camped full time for 10 years in natural areas and wilderness in the Western US. What was I doing anyway? I was actually being a pilgrim seeking my roots and my salvation. I am an atheist and have no religion whatsoever. But I find my religion in nature. After all, that is where we came from and that is what we shall return to. When I was hiking I would often pull off the trail and simply worship nature. Tears would come to my eyes as I contemplated the beauty of the natural scene before me. I never encountered a cyclist in all those years. I would encounter a few other hikers of course and a few rare horse parties. But never any cyclists. The English will have to go to northern Scotland to find any kind of wilderness, but the Aussies will find it in their interior deserts. We Americans still have plenty of it left too, but we need to protect it and preserve it at all costs. Mountain bikers are into fun and games. The natural world is nothing but a playground for them. The fact is that there are hundreds of thousands of miles of forestry and fire roads for them to do their thing. I do not ever want them on a hiking trail. Chris Foster is not stupid. He has told me that he is also a hiker and a backpacker. Surely it is not asking too much that bikers confine their activities to whatever roads already exist and to stay off of hiking trails. Mike Vandeman of RBS is a purist and we need types like him. I consider him the world's foremost expert on the damage that mountain bikers do to natural areas and to the human spirit. We do not want to end up in a world where there are no natural areas left for our spirit. Surely, Chris Foster can understand this. Regards, Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota PS. I have decided to include the mountain cycling newsgroup in this post since they are enthusiastic about the subject no matter how wrongheaded.

Humans are a part of the habitat, when you remove them and the changes they make you have no natural habitat. It's like removing beavers because they damage the habitat. They ARE the habitat. Same thing with humans. We've been cultivating forests and plains for thousands of years. we've built paths through the wilderness since the very beginning. The lands without our work is not "natural." Now quit acting like a tenured retard and get out in the woods and enjoy them the way you're supposed to.

We humans are "unnatural" monsters pure and simple. We destroy whatever we touch. If and when the earth is ever rid of us, it will be a much better place for all of the other creatures. > Now quit acting like a tenured retard and get out in the woods and enjoy > them > the way you're supposed to. Yeah, loggers, diamond miners and big oil along with nuclear power plants are as much a part of the natural habitat and do about as much damage as beavers. However, "The lands without our work is not natural" was most likely written by your undeniably more intelligent mongoloid brother.

You can stick your head in the sand all you want. Your assertion was proven wrong. Didnt you even read the replies to your stupid statement. I will cut and paste it again for you and all to read once again: From a long list of characteristics, the last one listed at <http://www.bear.org/Black/Black_Bear_Facts.html > is Greatest misconception: The greatest misconception about black bears is that they are likely to attack people in defense of cubs. They are highly unlikely to do this. Black bear researchers often capture screaming cubs in the presence of bluff-charging mothers with no attacks. Defense of cubs is a grizzly bear trait. About 70 percent of human deaths from grizzly bears are from mothers defending cubs, but black bear mothers have not been known to kill anyone in defense of cubs. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

< snip van-DUH-mans BS > > Because it's impossible for me to understand such irrational people. I will keep it as simple as I can for you. 1) You made an assertion (Black bears attack to protect cubs) 2) Your assertion was proven to be wrong http://www.bear.org/Black/Black_Bear_Facts.html 3) I ask a simple question "why cant you admit you were wrong" Question 1) How is that irrational? Question 2) Why cant you admit you were wrong? -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com

I think even the redoubtable Tom Sherman has left the group. We need all the other cycling groups we can get here. If and when ARBR ever recovers its former glory (destroyed by the criminal vandal troll Ed Gin) we can cut lose from all the current irrelevant trash posting.
