I see a "silver lining" in this dark cloud. As oil prices continue to
climb, other, perhaps renewable sources become more economically
viable. I've read that photovoltaics are now viable on remote islands
that had been relying on diesel generators. I've also read that a
series of floating platforms with windmills on 'em floating in Long
Island Sound could supply much of the electricity needs of LI. Finally,
I remember when I lived in Stony Brook and there were problems with the
Shoreham nuclear plant that it was said that if every home on Long
Island were properly insulated that it would save more electricity than
was generated by that plant. I see these rising prices as an
opportunity, not a punishment. Let's not gloat, benters!(Except, of
course when we see the wedgie riders with crotch rot!)

Nice. You don't mind if we dig a hole in your backyard to contain the spent

In the San Francisco Bay Area I've seen 87 octane as high as
US$2.75/gallon and 91 octane as high as US$2.95/gallon. Traffic levels
seem the same. Last time I was in Europe in 1999 it cost the equivalent
of US$70 to fill up the fairly small tank on the Renault Scenic I was
renting. I'm sure it would cost more now with the higher crude oil
prices and the lower value of the US$. On 1 May 2005 I filled up the
tank of my Toyota Previa for the first time since 31 October 2004 and
it cost US$50. Still way underpriced in my opinion but I guess people
who drive a lot and/or drive poor fuel economy vehicles are
complaining.

Filled up my motorcar last week. Equivalent of 6.15 USD / US gallon. On
the whole I'm rather glad it does sixty to the (Imperial) gallon on long
runs...

I'm fueling my V-REX with Hacker-Pschorr, at about $12 per gallon, but it
gets increasingly difficult to stay upright and on the road at higher
consumption levels. I may need to get a trike to resolve at least one of
these problems.

Like Hummer drivers? The last time gas prices went up, they were appealing

only got about 6 mpg.

A Hummer guy told me he didn't care what the gas cost as long as it's
available without a hassle. He's probably typical of most owners. It's
getting the gas without a hassle that's important to guys making $20,000+
per month. Hummer owners appealing to Pres. Bush to "do something about the
gas price" or claim the absurd "I didn't realize the what the gas mileage
was" are too pathetically dumb to own a Hummer and ought to have the federal
government confisticate the damn thing, armor it, and send it to Iraq.

That tends to be an obvious answer, what good is expensive (or cheap) gas
when you can't get it?

Interesting you single out $20,000 and above, the price and hassle of
getting gas would be much more critical for people making under that

I'll attempt to explain. $20,000+ per month is an arbitary figure which is
about what the Hummer guy (doctor) I was talking to makes. There is no
other significance to it.

As a generalization, and as a generalization only:

People with much lower incomes might be willing to put up with a lot of
hassle - driving around looking for gas, awaiting in long lines, etc. just
to be able to get gas at a price they can afford. They would most likely
favor price controls and be willing to put up with all the hassles that go
with controls. To them the affordability is more important than the hassle.

Then there are people with high incomes who don't care so much what it costs
as long as they can pull up to a pump and get it without being
inconvenienced or spending a lot of time in the process. Their time and
convenience is worth more to them than the extra price of the gasoline.
Affordability is not the issue.

Yes, sometimes writing that doesn't include some made up nonsense can be
about as much fun an out of gas Hummer. You are a very discerning reader to
spot it.

To tell the truth, this sounds apocryphal. If you can afford a Hummer, and
feel you need one, you're not going to squirm about a dollar-per-gallon
increase in gas prices.
