Subject: Frustrated with pantour suspension hub anyone else?
I got a pant our suspension hub and got a 20" wheel built with it from my
bent. I bought it in Feb and here in Portland or for some reason we did not have
any rain in two months. I my have gotten 5 miles in the rain. Well I found the
bearings felt like they were over tightened. Well this hub uses sealed
cartridge bearings and there is no adjustment for that,. So I call them up and
they have me send the wheel to them. I paid for the postage. It took about a
month to get it back. They had to call my mechanic to verify that the hub was
only a month or so old. Well they said the bearings looked like they had no
grease in them at all. (At first I think they thought I had the hub for 5 years
the way the bearings looked. So I get it back and put it on. It is a bit slow
because you have to change the tire the magnet and readjust the brake pads.
Well I rode about 30 miles in the rain (ten miles each time) and today I notice
the grinding again.
So what they put defective bearings in again?
So what do I do I don't want to have to pay return shipping again. I wonder how
much it would cost to have a local bearing shop install new good bearings.
Should I get them to pay for it?

Sounds like the bearings are not sealed and you're getting water into them
,which is washing out or thinning the grease.
If it were me I would return the hub for a refund ,don't know what bent
you're riding but ,there are suspension forks avaliable .

they are supposed to be. but how could the grease wash out in only 30 miles?
even my chain had not started squeaking. I called pantour and they are pretty
baffled. they have never had anything like this happen. I guess 5 years ago they
had bearing problems.
they paid for return shipping so I will see what happens.
I thought about a suspension fork but they are pretty expensive for good ones
and burley said they don't know how the bike would handle with one as they had
never tested it.

I would knock the bearings out. Then pull one of the seals and clean and
regrease the bearings. I use green waterproof trailer grease. Then put
the bearings back in with the sealed side out. You can clean and
regrease the bearing whenever you wish.

Paying for shipping or new bearings always seems like a waste of money
to me.
I have a Pantour front wheel on the BikeE2 and will put one on the M5
tandem soon. If you think I have too many tandems. No way 5 is not enough.
