Subject: Gear chain on ez-3 recumbent, and other bike mgt issues

Hello:
I have owned an EZ-3 recumbent trike for about 3 years now. The first
year was great. The second year the gear chain kept falling out of its
groove and after a while I gave up on it. This is the third year.
This is my second time riding it since we got it out of maintenance.
We have been bringing the trikes in for maintenance once a year in the
early spring. My wife's trike is working very well for her.
Well the first time I kept the left hand (major gear ) in 1 and I was
able to change gears on the right hand side freely.
Today I shifted the left hand gear into 2 and things started to feel a
little weird. I moved it back , then I started downshifting the right
hand from 7 and the gear chains get all out of whack and the pedals
stop having any "power".
Now when the trike works I love it, but mechanically I have no skills
whatsoever.
So here are my questions:
1) Are all bikes / trikes like this mechanically or am I particularly
unlucky?
2) How are people managing to bring their EZ-3 recumbents into the shop
or anywhere else for that matter? Its pretty hard to carry even one on
a roof rack or on the back of a car?

I do my own work so I don't have to take it to the shop. But, I do carry
it sometimes when I ride with the local bike club. I carry mine on an
old Rhode Gear Shuttle with 2 small bungie cords. I monut the rack on my
96 Dodge Neon.

I have a Sun EZ-3 USX trike that fits nicely into a Ford Windstar
minivan with lots of room to spare (the seats in the Minivan were
removed and stored). But there are lots of roof and bumper carriers
available; I understand there are even towing devices for certain
trikes.
