Subject: HPV's contra porsches
Hi there,

I was wondering why the HPV are very unpopular in todays world, but my
wondering lasted actually not for very long, since it is basically
obvious:

1 HPV's are quite expensive, you can get a really serious (second hand)
porsche for the money you pay for a new (or even second hand)
alleweder. For regular guy's this might be a consideration.

2 HPV's look extremely nurdy, and no wonder, since the only people that
drive them are at least slightly nurdy and have a design taste that
goes with that. porsches dont look nurdy

3 HPV's are very unpractical compared to bicycles, since for instance
it is hard to place your bobike seats, or cool girlfriend on it.
Porsches can handle both girl/boyfriends and two children.

As a possible solution I would suggest the following:

Design something that would do great in the world of cruel fighting
games/star trek kind of thing

Produce it cheaply in the far east at normal wages in stead of by
western PhD's (regular bikes are also made there!!)

Make a kind of step on-convertible bike out of it that looks really
cool and is good for cruising with girl/boyfriends in the back seat or
trunk.

And so in 2010 there are more HPV's than the Stuttgart plant can
produce!!

<SNIP >

But to be frank you see one on the raod and think
" there goes a want to be boy racer twat !!!!!! "
Especially when they gun the engine at lights.....
besides nurdy is mere statistics if enough people get / do NURDY then
...BEHOLD its fasionable !!!!!!

Well I dont seem te be a environment freak or low on euro's. By the way
a two hour ride at 30+ km/hour takes:
300 grams penne rigate (0.60Euro)
1 can of peeled tomatoes (0.45 Euro)
1can of tomato concentrate(0.15 Euro)
a small union(0.05 euro)
6 "kappertjes"(0.01 euro)
a little parmesan cheese(0.1 euro)

Although cheap this makes up to 1.36euro /60 km (excluding drinks,
inner tires etc)
My volvo 240 runs +/- 1/9 - > 6liters*1.4 euro 8.4

Ergo volvo's drive less efficient when taking only one person. When
transporting five people + all possible luggage it would equal out.

Not upside down bathtub or squashed jelly bean smoggers either!
(functionality; as you cruise by the $2.89 gas sign)

$600-800 each is indeed not much.

this might increase sales quite a bit.

A new keting list:

Functionality
Neighbour factor
Coolness
Dealer proximity

In the U.S., they're sold by Actionbent: http://www.actionbent.com/

Prices are definitely on the low end of the recumbent spectrum.

with them?

There are 150,000 cars produced every day. If HPV's were produced in
that quantity, we'd probably be paying $50 for each one.

Used to drive a 924, it was not clean in any sense but the thing drove
nicely. Also it was cool (or hot in summer).

The relative amount of steel, power engineering etc against price is
quite amazing.

If you've got a clean 911 Turbo, I'll willingly give you the price of a
2nd-hand Alleweder for it...

Very sad that people went the climate change/air quality/noise and air
polution, respiratory and visual problematic direction. Nice being out
of the Pied Piper philosophy. Yes; recumbents have been high cost for
me- the government dinged me $11,600. for a massive collection of
'bents I could fit in a 1-car garage. Great investment over the years-
MANY years. Buy a Hell of a lot of Porshes but they would cost more:
smog tests bi-annually, insurance, registration, maintenance on a high
profile vehicle, not to mention cheap gas and oil. And still have a
worn out dinosour in 5 years. But that $11,600. was over 15 years for
me. Makes more financial sense.
1- Yes; expensive- 'bent #1 was $50. home-made and over 10 years later
was $250. to rebuild after many miles so all I could afford was a can
of spray paint in the end to cover the scratches.
2- Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Porches look nerdy to me, SUVs
terrible. Both are useless to me except maybe I could sleep in a
station wagon....
3- 'bents have been VERY practical for me; kept my weight way down
and health good, carry more than I ever think, -shopping or yard sales
come to mind. Could afford to live as I wanted. I was doing gardening
for a while with one 'bent (S & B Venice Beach- cost under $950.) which
would easily out-do any Porsche in a yard or mud puddle .
I have no overall solution, but have all I need- velomobile too-
American made Pod- without begging for an Allweder. Enjoy the Porsche
fantasy. Just in time for that $3.00 gallon gas, the crowded stressed
out car lanes, and that hypnotic "GET AHEAD - GET AHEAD!" lifestyle.
