Subject: How to Try Out a Recumbent?
I have become very interested in recumbent bikes. I'll be
moving shortly to San Diego and wonder if there is any place
in the area selling them or renting them so I could try one out
and see if it suits?

The cost is considerable and I wouldn't want to buy one without
assurance that I really liked it and was able to manage it, etc.

When you get there, look up Bill Volk (search the IHPVA site for his
name and most recent email). He's ridden many different recumbents and
should know of the local shops that deal in recumbents. Among others, I
think Alan's Family Bicycle in Oceanside carries Easy Racer products.

I used to live in the San Diego area, but I've moved to Vancouver, WA,
right across from Portland, Oregon. There's lots of recumbent riders
here:

Go to Google Local and look up Recumbent Bicycle in that area, I have been
to several places in that area that offer recumbents although I don't know
if they rent them

I live in San Diego and best as I can determine there is only one area
bikeshop with a presence in recumbents - Kirk's Bike Shop in Ramona.

There are two recumbent riding groups that meet on the weekends in
Mission Bay. I think one of these focuses on, but is not restricted
to, Lightnings.

Like you, I am considering a 'bent.

The problem with any shop I've been to in that area is they usually have one
or two recumbents, I would strongly suggest going a little farther north in
Orange for

You will not be disappointed

No but I'm always interested in a recumbent oriented shop so I'll check it
out next time

I would say that is a /very/ sound policy. Even if you already you know
you like a particular recumbent I would suggest try before you buy on
any other sort, as seat comfort for /your/ body, riding position etc.
all vary quite considerably. Certainly more than is the case on upright
bikes, and with many bespoke seat designs (and more to the point,
bespoke fixings for them) it isn't just a case of changing to a seat you
know you like.
