Subject: IMPORTANT - Groupwide Notice - PLEASE READ!
Hey again folks -

OKAY, GUYS! Many of us here have at one time or another,
maybe two or three times in fact, tried to do his best
to minimize the impact of the TROLL on the ARBR
experience, either for himself or for the group as a
whole. This may be as good a time as we're ever going to
have, so let's - for the next two weeks or so - try it
ALL TOGETHER NOW as a carefully coordinated group
effort. Maybe instead of starting another obscure forum,
we can make this one more useful.

I think it's safe to say that most of the people who post
or peek in on ARBR agree that this TROLL is our major
problem, and that without him, most of us could get along
quite nicely and this group may have a chance to be worth
clicking into.

DECLARATION: IT'S OUR NEWSGROUP, DAMMIT, NOT THE TROLL'S!

SUGGESTION: Let's ALL (the real, nice people who honestly
do want the newsgroup to work) make a concerted effort to
use the forum just as if it wasn't preyed upon by the
ogre for a short trial period. If we can work together
within a serious, coordinated system, maybe we can make
it practical to enjoy the forum in spite of the TROLL.

Let's try these techniques suggested by Curtis (and
dozens of others over the last few years) to see if it
does make the newsgroup a bit more pleasant and somewhat
more practical. Let's ALL follow the guidelines below
thru the rest of this month (January 2007) and see - real
world - how effective they really are at providing a bit
of insulation from our worst annoyance.

READING THE NEWSGROUP:

Should be fairly simple.

IF YOU USE A NEWSREADER:

Killfile, filter or do whatever it takes to eliminate
all messages from or mention of the TROLL. If you need
help, ask for it in this thread or by emailing any
'volunteers' off-group. You may also find it advisable
to suppress its muttonheaded minion (or mutant Mini-Me,
maybe?) 'nget' aka 'Mike the Barker'. Since the former
often posts via Cycling Forums (which assigns a kind of
coded variable email address), you may need a trick,
which one of our newsreader gurus (not me!) may also be
able to provide.

IF YOU USE A WEB BROWSER:

Make a concerted effort to mentally tune out and ignore
the TROLL's posts on the website you've been using for
access; don't go into the threads he starts, and skip
over his posts to other threads. If that's too annoying,
use another gateway and archive that filters him out.
Contrary to claims by the idiot itself, there are several
alternatives to Google Groups (the most common web-based
Usenet interface). You may prefer to use (TROLL-free!)
Cycling Forum webpages, to read the group:

http://www.cyclingforums.com/f167-alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent.html

[If that long line gets ginked, just go to their homepage,
then to their own (in-house) recumbent forum, and click
on the link near the top for real ARBR content.] Bookk
it when you get it. It isn't necessary to join in order
to view messages posted there from ARBR, only to post via
their gateway.

FOR POSTING (EVERYONE!):

1. DO IT - THIS MONTH! As way too many folks have noted,
one thing ARBR desperately needs is pertinent content.
Post a message here, even if it's cross-posted at BROL.
Ask a friend to post at ARBR. I'll follow this up by
starting a legitimate on-topic thread. YOU'RE NEXT! If
you can think of any interesting subject to discuss,
please post it this month.

2. REPLY TO ON-TOPIC THREADS - If you have something to
say, say it. But please don't copy the entire content of
previous posts, ESPECIALLY if they contain off-topic
rambling, if there is any reference to the TROLL or if
any of its content is included, even if it seems to be
on-topic, and even if you don't reply to it. The goal is
to have a worthwhile discussion with ZERO input from the
dreadful dimwit.

3. STAY ON TOPIC - Talk about 'bents, not the TROLL, not
the newsgroup, and not the anonymous profane SPAMMER who
has been off and on lately. Don't reply to any off-topic
threads, or off-topic content in valid threads. Don't
quote, repeat or include links to off-topic content, and
don't comment about it. Mostly: DON'T FEED THE TROLL!
What it says about you doesn't matter; just do your
dead-level best to ignore its insults, its challenges,
its taunts and its questions. For two weeks or so,
please, everyone, just do your best to pretend the TROLL
simply doesn't exist.

4. ISOLATE OFF-TOPIC CONTENT - If at the last ditch, you
simply cannot refrain from off-topic content, put it in
this thread if it's relevant to this specific effort, or
if it's not, in the failsafe backup clearly labeled off-
topic 'DON'T FEED THE TROLL!' thread. Don't worry about
continuity; you can cut and paste anything to which
you're replying from its original location and indicate
quotes by using a right-pointing carat ('greater than'
symbol), allocated to its original poster in text as
needed. Even if you're relatively non-net-savvy, don't
sweat it; just take your best shot at formatting whatever
you have to say, without worrying about who's offended
or amused by your style.

5. DON'T SNIPE OR EVEN GIVE ADVICE PUBLICLY TO OTHER
POSTERS WHO SCREW UP - If you feel the need to ping
another poster because he's done something that you
feel is counterproductive, he's made a grammatical
error or whatever, do it privately rather than by
posting to the whole group. Part of the character of
a good open forum is active, robust disagreement on
pertinent topics, so that's good; please just don't
get off into style or personality differences.

And baduh-baduh-baduh... THAT'S ALL, FOLKS! Please
print this out if it helps as a reminder. Email me
privately if there's any way I can help, or even if
you simply feel a strong urge to ream me out about
this or anything - except the poetry of course. ;-)

Regards,
Wayne

Hey guys -

This message is a reminder that we are still trying a
groupwide coordinated effort to get ARBR's TR0LL out of
our faces. I really believe - as do most of you other
readers and/or posters, I think - that we may be able to
make this succeed. If we can all work together - but ONLY
IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER! - we can reduce the TR0LL's
impact on this forum to noise level. It really does take
only three simple steps:

1. SET UP YOUR COMPUTER SO THAT YOU NEVER EVEN SEE
THE TR0LL'S POSTS.

If you use classical newsreader software to monitor
ARBR, set up killfiles and/or filters so that its
direct posts and references to it don't come through.
If you need help, ask for it in this thread, via direct
email to one of the other posters (not me!) who seems
to know how to implement this kind of TR0LL traps.

If you prefer a web-based gateway, use Cycling Forums
rather than Google Groups:

http://www.cyclingforums.com/f167-alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent.html

This website blocks messages from the TR0LL. Even if you
use the Google gateway, and either can't or won't set up
killfile/filters, please use your own (presumably adult)
discretion to filter out and/or ignore its content.

2. DON'T REPLY TO THE TR0LL'S POSTS.

If all of us non-TR0LLS who post to the group complied
with Step One, Step Two would be unnecessary. But of
course everyone won't, and as a result, the TR0LL is
able to intrude through a sort of back door, even to the
folks who did follow Step One.

PLEASE NOTE: When you reply to one of the TR0LL's posts,
you become a kind of codependent. YOU are giving it the
only access it can get to everyone who did set up Step
One, and who would, without your post, never know it's
still in the world. This plan only works if almost
everyone who uses this group can maintain some level of
reasonable self-restraint. When anybody responds to the
TR0LL, that person essentially, if unwittingly, becomes
its lacky!

Don't reply to any thread started by the TR0LL. Don't
respond to any of its posts to any other thread, on or
off topic, even if it seems to be relevant. Please ignore
its attacks, taunts, questions, challenges and its
(usually insincere, often preposterous) opinions even if
they seem to be on topic. Don't EVER reply or respond to
the TR0LL via the newsgroup - PERIOD!

Even if you can't refrain from replying to the TR0LL,
please do it off-group via email if you can stand it.
This may be a sort of a valid crosscheck: if it's not
worth a private email, it's probably not worth posting
to the group either. Most of the folks here have read
all they ever want to read about the TR0LL, pro or con.

If you absolutely have to reply to it via the group,
please put your reply in the 'DON'T FEED THE TROLL! -
Off Topic' thread. Quote only the absolute minimum of
its content (cut and paste), and never assign it using
the TR0LL's real name.

Guys, I know - as well as anyone here, I suspect - that
it's not easy, but the bottom line to this is simple:
WE ALL JUST HAVE TO IGNORE THE DAMNED TR0LL!

3. POST AS MUCH ON-TOPIC CONTENT AS YOU CAN HERE!

More suggested guidelines are in my original post on
this thread. I apologize to you folks for being so
long-winded, and I won't repeat them here.

One way that we can optimize the appeal of this forum
is to put back the real, interesting discussion about
recumbents that is the only reason for its existence.
BROL has clearly become the priy forum for 'bents
now, and I doubt that anything we do here will change
that, but I really believe there is still a place for
this kind of open, non-commercial forum. If we can sort
of kickstart it, ARBR may become a much more attractive
place for a lot of other 'bent enthusiasts to visit and
to stop in for a chat.

Regards,
Wayne

Anyone who does the above will incur my wrath and will suffer the
consequences. If you wish to reply to a message of mine, you had better post
it in the proper thread to which it belongs - or else.

Wayne Leggett is one of the biggest assholes this newgroup has ever been
afflicted with. He would like to be your moderator even though he advises
that you break all the rules of netiquette. This group would not last a
single month with a moderator like Wayne. All he really wants to do is to
post his verse reeking of Shit and Piss and Ass and Fuck. We need him like
we need another hole in our heads.

But poor slobs like Jeff Grippe are taken in by such scoundrels as Wayne
Leggett. It is a good thing indeed that the Great Ed Dolan is here to keep
all of you on the straight and narrow. I have rid this group of Wayne's
execrable verse just as I have of Jeff's lust for women not his wife. The
latter deed was done mainly through the ministrations of Saint Edward the
Great. If Wayne is not careful, I may sic Saint Edward the Great on him too.

ARBR has always had its share of ostriches. However, this is never a good
way to go because before you know it I will be kicking your sorry asses and
you won't even know of it. But of course, everyone else will know of it. How
st is that?

Well, yes, this second way is the ONLY way to go of course, but it is very
difficult not to respond to someone so Great as Myself. Let's face it, I
have the knack of kicking others squarely in the ass where it hurts. I
proved that over and over again with Wayne Leggett, the Poet of Shit and
Piss and Ass and Fuck.

Those who email from the newsgroup will never even get read (unless you are
praising me to high heaven for being the genius that I am). What I do on
the group is one thing, what I do on email is something else entirely.

The above will only work provided I cooperate. I too know how to move
threads and posts around at will. However, I will cooperate for the time
being, but not because of anything Wayne is up to. He would like to be the
moderator of this group, and it will be interesting to see how many of you
will let him do this. I think he only has a couple of other assholes who are
in full agreement with him. They are the ever despicable English of course,
a race of assholes.

Wayne knows that I, not him, am the ultimate housekeeper for this group.
However, I am going to let this thing of his run its course and see how it
plays out. I did get rid of all the liberals and many other assorted
assholes, but then it turned out there was hardly anyone left. I think
recumbent cyclists are for the most part crazy bastards to begin with, at
least those that post to ARBR, but I would be delighted to be proved wrong.
We shall see what we shall see.

I think I have cured Wayne Leggett, the Poet of Shit and Piss and Ass and
Fuck, from ever posting his verse here again. Let us hope so! Now if Jim
McNaa would be man enough to stop stalking the Great Ed Dolan like a
female bitch in heat and if Ed Gin would put a bullet though what passes for
his brain, then we might get somewhere on this group.

By the way, Tom Sherman need never return to this group. Does not everyone
hate a coward?

I agree with what Wayne is saying, I have kill filed the troll and will not
see any of its posts unless one of you engages it in conversation.

Jeff, I know you mean well but the troll does not, please kill file it.

Buck of the UK wants to be your moderator along with Wayne Leggett and Jeff
Grippe. Jeez, I don't know about the rest of you, but I sure would not want
these cretins to have anything to say about what others can or cannot do.
From what I have been able to observe, they can hardly run their own lives,

Or just respond directly through email rather than give him more

Whoops! I forgot about this other idiot from the UK. He wants to be your

that is) at Ninewells Hospital, so that automatically disqualifies him in my

Wayne,

I understand where you are going with this. Personally I do not block him.
When I want to respond to him I am moving my response to a thread that is
already labeled as off-topic. That way, he can respond in an off topic
thread which shouldn't bother anybody. If he goes out of his way to move an
off topic conversation back to an "on topic" thread then I'll keep moving it
back to an off topic thread.

This seems to be working well. Since he always wants to reply, he replies in
the off-topic thread, which is fine.

Meanwhile, I agree that people should keep starting new on-topic threads and
replying to existing ones.

I don't think we can eliminate him but we should be able to contain him.
Hopefully this will placate his antagonists as well.

Nope, I will not stand for anyone playing around with my posts, most
particularly, not you. I know what is off-topic and what is on-topic and I
do not need a slob like you trying tell me the difference. Remember, I
consider housekeeping chores to be on-topic. I can get really nasty if
others play around with my posts. I do not think you want to play games with
me. Look what I did to Wayne Leggett!

Again, I have permit it thus far, but no further. Do not move a post of
mine out of a thread that it has been posted to no matter what it says. You
have been warned!

You and Wayne Leggett are not yet the moderators for this group. Neither of
you have the brains for that. You move my posts around willy-nilly at your
peril!

Ed Gin, the SPAMMING TROLL, has shown all of us what it is possible to do to
really mess up an unmoderated newsgroup like ARBR. I don't think any of you
want me pulling an Ed Gin unless you are suicidal.

You will not "contain" me by trickery. Do it fair and square and all will be
well, Do it crookedly and you will regret it.

I would listen to Wayne if I were you. He is an idiot the same as you are
but he reveals some level of sophistication about newgroups. Unfortunately,
he has no solution to the SPAMMING TROLL (Ed Gin) other than to never
mention him. It is this kind of cowardice which destroys newsgroups, not
off-topic and contentious posts.

Other newsgroups are more resilient than ARBR. They make short work of
SPAMMING TROLLS because they stick together and castigate the offender. That
is something that ARBR has never been able to do. And so we are brought to
the present sorry state of affairs.

I do not believe there are more than a dozen regular posters to this group.
I suspect there are not many who are following the group as readers either.
I am not opposed to a moderated ARBR, but I do not see how it would be any
different than BROL. It would be strictly for dullards like you - and Wayne
and Curtis. An Ed Dolan, despite his Greatness, need not apply. Even poor
Jim would get booted out after a very brief interval.

Do we really want to discuss anything much with the likes of Old Cletus Lee
of Houston, Texas or Curtis Russell of Odenton, yland? In other words,
are you sure you want to die and go to Hell just yet? If you do, why not go
to BROL instead. It has the main attribute of Hell - terminal boredom!

Nay, better to give ARBR as it is another chance rather than make another
BROL.

Actually, I think this newsgroup belongs to M*RT*N KR**G. I suppose if
someone (not me) cared enough they could look up the *CHARTER*. There might
be a rule barring attacks of an abusive nature on other posters.

The SPAMMING TROLL (Ed Gin) actually belongs in a prison. Never mind any
breaking of rules. How about the breaking of laws?

Despite the objections from he who shall not be mentioned here by name
here, this sounds like a sincere and well thought through approach that
should apply to both our long-standing permanent resident troll and our
more recent spamming troll(s) as well. For the most part, the latter
has been basically ignored to no avail, but eventually I suppose they
will tire especially when nice riding weather returns and they have
better things to do with their overabundance of time. I read this post
after reading the DON'T FEED THE TROLL! post in which I did post a
reply for which I have no regret since it was posted in the
pre-designated thread and addresses the issue of a trolls in general an
one in particular. Good luck with this. I'm on board. - Jim McNaa

At least Jim mentions the SPAMMING TROLL (Ed Gin) which is more than Wayne
Leggett has ever done. That is because Jim is by far a more honest person
than Wayne. Wayne borders on being a scoundrel almost as bad as Ed Gin (the
SPAMMING TROLL) for being so deaf to the harm that is done to the group by
such conduct. Wayne may also be a coward which would account for his never
mentioning the SPAMMING TROLL. Jim, whatever else he is, is not a coward.

Wayne Leggett has shown some sophistication and concern for the welfare of
the group, so I will now place him along side of Jon Meinecke and Tom
Sherman who were similarly constituted. In other words, I am now going to
hold Wayne to a far higher standard than I do the rest of you slobs. He will
no longer be able to get away with being silent on THE issue that confronts
this newsgroup - that is the issue of the SPAMMING TROLL. Neglect this issue
at your peril.

Yes, Jim, let us stay on our own threads since no one else is reading any of
our shit anyway. Hells Bells, I am just barely reading it myself! We will
call ourselves the "Ed & Jim Show." You do not play the guitar by any

All of the above is for nothing. Why? Because most folks on this group are
idiots. Wayne is the biggest idiot of all of course having no perspective on
anything. He even thinks it is appropriate to write verse to this group
about shit and piss and ass and fuck. Where did he ever get that idea I
wonder?

Well, it all just goes to show that idiots are born and not made. Poor Wayne
has gone around the bend, sitting there in his recumbent trike shop all day
never being able to sell anything to anyone. Hells Bells, if I were him I
would be going crazy too!

I meant someone who thinks that it isn't safe to ride without a water
bottle, the same way helmet Nazis think it isn't safe to ride without a
helmet.

Hygiene, I agree with. Always listen to your wife!

Sometimes, I have to wonder whether non-bicyclists' suspicions of
cyclists are right: that folks who still play with such a "toy" are
simply immature.

What's the matter with people here? Can't you learn to ignore stuff
you don't want to read? If you see it's a post by someone you don't
want to read, don't read it! Simple!! I don't understand all this
talk about trolls driving a newsgroup aground. I mean, when you're out
on the road, haven't you learned yet to ignore honking motorists??

I've been on a few bike rides with one of the local bike clubs, and, my
God, what a collection of chuckleheads! No, the vast majority of
people were all right, but there was almost always at least one person
who's a helmet Nazi (don't laugh: I've even encountered a water bottle
Nazi!), or who thinks the ride is too long, or too slow, or who
misinterprets something and winds up lost, or who trips over a small
bump in the road, etc.

Anyway, I guess the bright side of it all is, I'm glad you people are
on bikes, and not being the wheels! LOL....

Yeah, my wife is one. SHe thinks they should be washed after every
ride, or at least every week or so. Comes from being a nurse. I, OTOH,
think that stuff growing in the bottle is a sign of a healthy
ecosphere.
