I plan on removing my 42T middle ring on my Ultegra triple crank and replacing it with a 40t Q-Ring. Should I just do that or replace both the middle and the outer? The outer is a 52t ring now, and I think that the 50t Q-Ring would be the way to go. Is my idea correct?

Seems so close 1T or 2T probably would not make too much difference. Not a good idea to mess with the small ring- I did; bad mistake: I had a triple ring (about 32, 42, 52) but put shorter cranks on (55mm instead of 170mm for a higher end- less Revolutions Per Minute) so I had to eliminate the small ring. Now I do not have the leverage or lower gear I had before. All I do is keep as fast RPMs as I can, but changing yours seems the way to go for very little risk of change. Changing just one ring might be a fit & finish or appearance problem. Might be wise to change both rings- your choice! I am going to change the center for sure, I just am not sure about the outer, that depends on the cash at the time of purchase. I would like to give the business to my LBS, even though his prices for the Q-Rings are $5.00 for the 40T and $10.00 for the 50t. He said if he combines it with another order I won't have to pay shipping.
