I lurked in this NG for a couple years, and yes, posted rarely to ask some
questions I couldn't get answers to and to share a couple special
experiences I thought others might enjoy (a truly magical midnight ride
under a full moon, and being herded off the road by the neighbor's harmless
but over-enthusiastic collie). When the tone of discourse and the signal to
noise ratio dropped too far, I bid farewell rather add to the pointless
cacaphony. I won't participate in an enterprise where presumably adult
members routinely demonstrate behaviors I won't tolerate from my own
children. I stopped back to see how things were going, truly hoping that
they had changed. Alas, that's still mostly not the case, as many (but not
all) of the responses to my admittedly (and intentionally) provocative post
show more clearly than anything I can say.
To those still trying to make this group a worthwhile endeavour, you have my
respect and admiration. To the others, well, there's really no point in
saying anything - others have already said it all, and probably better than
I. You didn't get it then and you still haven't.
Flame away, if you must (indeed, I doubt some will be able to resist the
temptation) but remember, you can probably out-ride me, but your karma will
catch you every time.

Ed Dolan the Great is still plugging away trying to make the group a
worthwhile endeavor, but he is not having much luck because of all the
trolls (like Wayne LoGo the Poet and Guy Chapman of the UK) residing on the
group and the lack of well disposed souls like Philbert who refuse to post
(except to complain). If all the Philberts in recumbent land would just post
the group would soon revive and we could get rid of some of these abominable
trolls who currently infest the group like flies on a dung heap.
My God, I think I am starting to sound like Jon Meinecke!

A TROLL MIGHT in real life be a saint,
But at ARBR, he quite clearly ain't.

I spend about 30 minutes maximum on ARBR every day. I think you must be
spending quite a bit more as searching for words to rhyme will take more
time.

ARBR is not a bad place for those chats. It relieves the monotony of all the
other on topic posts. Is there anything more boring in this world than
reading about how some want to ride fast on their blooming bikes.

Newbies can always find what they are looking for without much trouble. That
is why threads have subject titles.

Trolls can be the most interesting of anyone to be found on a newsgroup.
Witness your posting to this group as of late.
Clearly, I am an inspiration to your muse. Anyone who is reading this thread
besides you and me is way above the usual slobs to be found on this group. I
am sure Slugger is not reading any of this for instance. Leuck might be
reading some of this as he is st enough, but he is a total slob when it
comes to the manner of his posting. He refuses to use punctuation ks and
has a special antipathy for the humble period. However, it may be that he
thinks in phrases instead of in sentences like most normal people do. It
would be good for him to read your verse as you are excellent at punctuation
and can serve as an example to us all.

I take pride in comparing my count to the likes of Sherman. His messages
normally only consisted of a few lines, usually answering some newbie's
question about tires sizes or some other esoteric subject that no one is
interested in except him and the newbie. My messages range far and wide and
there is something in them for everyone, even for someone such as you. I wax
prolific on every subject under the sun, but I do try to stay off the
subject of recumbents as much as possible as there are many others here who
like to talk about that. After all, I do not want to monopolize all the
discussions on ARBR the way Sherman did.

The main thing is to be responsive which I think I always am. It actually
takes brains to be responsive. Criminal trolls are never responsive. They
just spew forth their bile for no other purpose than to annoy. I NEVER do
that!
However, you do have a point. There are many messages that are complete in
themselves and do not call for a response. But the trouble is I have such a
fertile mind that I can always manage a response to ANYTHING. But I mean to
add to what has been said, not to subtract. But I do agree with you, I need
to rein myself in a bit.
But wouldn't you feel bad if I didn't respond to this poem of yours about
trolls? Of course you would as you put a lot of work into it. I would be
remiss and feel bad if I didn't get back to you. Most messages aren't worth
bothering with, but yours clearly are. [Should yours be your's or yours' I
wonder?]

One of my main gripes about newsgroups and ARBR in particular is that you
never know where anyone is from. I just learned from another post of yours
that you are located in Southern California. Is this important? Yes, to me
it is . It tells me things about you that you would never suspect. I assure
you that Southern California is very different than Southern Minnesota and
that those differences are significant.
A poster who has no identity other than his bare message is a waste of time.
Place and personality count. For instance, you have already established a
considerable personality here on ARBR because of the manner of your posting.
So have I. Is this good? Hell yes, it is good!

I am never writing to just one person when I post to ARBR. Even this present
message of mine is for the group. It is not just for you any more than your
message is just for me. We can all learn and/or be amused by what others are
saying. Emails are emails and newsgorups are something else altogether.
Group is the key word in newsgroup in case you are confused.

"affonts" should be affronts.
Repetition is the key to all learning. Saying something once is NEVER
enough. Hells Bells! Repetition is the key to just getting through someone
else's thick skull and letting them know you are there. I thought everyone
knew this.

Keeping things "tactful and light" is a waste of time and energy with this
group. Those who top post know full well that what they are doing is wrong
and they do it anyway because they are lazy slobs. I tell it like it is and
let the chips fall where they may.
A certain amount of housekeeping is necessary on any newsgroup or else the
slobs take over and rule the place. I do not think you would like that any
better than I do.

I certainly do agree with you about editing. The fact is that most on this
group simply do not know how to edit. Since most do not know how to edit,
it is better to include the entire post to which you are responding if only
in part rather than to make a mess of the editing. For instance, Guy Chapman
of England has butchered more of my posts by faulty editing than anyone
else. He is intelligent but he does not know how to edit. Context is
everything and it always matters.
Also, please note that I am very good at responding to an entire post and
not to just parts of it, especially if it is an intelligent post to begin
with.

I believe I am a unique troll as I have never seen my like on this group, or
any other group either for that matter. I am not into ego, but I am into
making the group a better and more entertaining place than it would be
without me. I enhance the group. I do not detract from it. Both the old
timers and the newbies can read me and be amused. As far as I am concered,
even though we are neither of us on the subject of recumbents, this is the
best kind of posting that newsgroups are capable of. You now began to see
how valuable "good trolls" like YOU and me are!
I stay on certain threads for a reason and I stay off of other threads
equally for a reason. What I say to others is tic for tac. Be nice to me and
I will be nice back. Be ornery with me and I will be ornery back.
Am I a good troll? Yes, I believe I am. I am never angry with anyone except
for a certain criminal troll who happens to have the same first name as I
do. Anyone here can bounce things off of me and be sure of getting a
response. I do like to tweak others on occasion, but surely my essential
good nature comes through strong and bright. I play the game of newsgroup
fair and square, which is more than can be said for some others.
The greatest sin a newsgroup can be guilty of is boring everyone to death.
You and I prevent that. We should be getting a fee for our services to ARBR.

Nget is right. Wayne needs to get off this excrement kick as it spoils his
otherwise excellent poetry. The great poets rarely if ever mentioned
excrement. Poetry must elevate, not throw us down into the bowels of
depression. I suggest he bring death into his verse more as that is the only
proper subject of poetry.
I am still waiting for Wayne to tell the group how he does it, i.e., write
such good poetry. We not only want to know, we need to know so we can
retaliate. If enough of us get into doing this, we could rename ourselves
ARBR-V. You could only post to this new group in verse and I would grade you
on your efforts. ARBR without the V would be strictly for all others who are
not up to the taxing exertions of writing verse.
All of my verses will be about death and the grave. Did you know that I
collect epitaphs for a hobby? Here is the best one I have ever come across
in my life. It is from a tombstone in an Ohio cemetery, ever the heart of
the Old Midwest.
"Once I wasn't, Then I was, Now I ain't again."
I consider it the Universal Epitaph for all mankind. Yes, that means YOU!
And some here think I do not bring anything to the group!

For the newsgroup, the active way to "do something about it" is to
post and respond to more messages of the type you want to see.
The passive way is to refrain from posting and responding to
messages of the type you don't want to see. Both are important.

Maybe newsgroup lurkers are like dark matter... What they do not
post affects newsgroup content (positively or negatively, POV).

Poetry this good should not be picked apart, but a few comments:
"Unless you ask a question, entertain us

Newsgroups are not just about asking questions and getting answers or
exchanging subject specific knowledge.That is actually the very dullest part
of a newsgroup. But Wayne goes on to note the entertainment aspect. This is
far more important. The only thing worth reading most of the time on ARBR
are the stories that others tell about their adventures on their bikes. Here
is where personality enters into the equation. It is only the human element
that is finally interesting. We need to get rid of the idea that Q & A is
the essence of a newsgroup.
Wayne has got it right. My only purpose in being here is to furnish some wit
and knowledge and to occasionally tell a story or two. That is what Wayne
has consistently done (in verse no less) and much better than I.

I will admit that my recumbent posting is on BROL and the Easy Racers
boards, however if you knew how to search, the above is not true! I
have posted worthwhile responses to ARBR. You think if someone did not
post to you it is not worthwhile.

as the subject matter. Many more than start with Ed Gin. Many, many,

Hey, if you like to work, then work. I have been able to manage my life
without having to work. Most folks envy me. The world would be better off if
most weren't working thereby making the world infinitely worse. You surely

All of MInnesota is a miserable place to live. It is OK to visit here in the
summer time, but the rest of the year it is place fit only for idiots.
Anyone with any brains would be living in a more equable climate. Ever hear

No, I have been reading most of the messages here on ARBR for the past
several years and you stopped posting anything worth reading long ago, in
fact, ever since you discovered me. I say get over it. I know I am Great,
but I am not that Great.
See the recent threads on pedal steer to see what I am capable of when it
comes to a recumbent specific subject.

Perry, you are not able to make discriminations. What I do and what Gin does
is the difference between night and day. I am a good troll who loves to
tweak the group. Gin is a criminal troll who commits every violation of
newsgroup posting. It amazes me that you cannot make the most elementary
discriminations.
I am the resident expert on housekeeping on ARBR. That is my karma and seems
to have become my mission. I think it must be a holdover from my days as a
librarian. Librarians are essentially housekeepers. Housekeeping is what
turns a collection of books into a library. Housekeeping is what makes ARBR
more intelligent than it would otherwise be. I wonder what your mission is
on ARBR besides bugging me?
Jon Meinecke is another housekeeper I have noted. It is a shame we do not
get along better as I think we have a lot in common. Apparently, chemistry
is everything in human relations.

Right you are HHS! Maybe if they would contribute something themselves to
the group instead of making inane comments which go nowhere, we could have a
better group. But they are takers, not givers. ARBR has always been plagued
by these types. If you do not like the group the way it is, then post
something that you think will be of interest and enjoyment to others. That
is how easy it is to improve things.

Poor Perry thinks Alexandria, Minnesota is some kind of paradise whereas I
know it is the pits. It is just like Worthington, Minnesota - only worse. It
is better to be an honest working town than a run down resort town living
off a few lakes. But that is northern Minnesota for you - ever ready to take
the suckers to the cleaners.
All Perry has known how to do for the past year is to call me dumb and a
liar - when he knows of course that I am brilliant and penetratingly
truthful. I can only attribute this phenomenon to his jealousy of me. Yes,
we are both from Minnesota and so we understand one another perfectly. He
knows my type and I know his type and never the twain shall meet.

Poor Perry! All he knows how to do these days is to call others liars with
no context whatsoever. However, I think he may be referring to my leave
taking awhile back, but surely no one expected me to stay away from the
group for very long. I have responsibilities to the group which weigh
heavily on me - and I never shirk a duty.
Did Perry speak up when the criminal vandal troll was here wrecking ARBR? I
don't think so! He was hunkered down in miserable Alexandria, Minnesota. But
Northerners are like that. They are never around when needed and always
around when not needed.

All it takes to ruin a newsgroup is one vandal, most especially when no one
will stand up and defend the group. However, that appears to be changing
somewhat as a few others have decided to speak up about the recent outrages.
It may be that ARBR can recover. Let us hope so as it was not really such a

The comma is appreciated even though a period is clearly beyond you.
Leuck is not as bad as I have made him out to be as he has recently acquired
some backbone and is willing and able to take on a certain vandal criminal
troll. No, that is not me. I am a good troll and enhance the group. I do not
destroy it. I wonder if the day will ever come when this group is able to
make some distinctions among trolls.
Mazzoleni, like me, was another good troll. We were well mannered and stayed
on the appropriate threads. We did not use sock puppets and forge other's
names to our posts. We were open and above board and responsive to what
others were saying. We were not vandals and did not destroy threads for no
reason. Most importantly, unlike a certain vandal criminal troll, we do not
go about destroying newsgroups for the fun of it.
I think I am going to write a little essay about trolls and their proper
place on a newsgroup. Everybody stay tuned.
