I'm planning to go on a round-trip bicycle trip next
month from the Sacramento, CA area to Crater Lake National
Park in Oregon. Anybody have comments on what roads to
take or avoid? Thanks.

Take all the interesting back roads! Oregon is a great ride.
Are you going to ride around the rim? About 35 miles and 3400 more feet
of climbing, takes another four to six hours so get an early start from
below. Look at the profile of the rim road so you know what to expect.
It's a long way to the top but if you know how to climb, it's just not
that big a deal, 5000 feet in 20-45 miles, depending on where you
start. The last 7 miles are the steepest.
You're planning this trip in May? The rim might be closed, the Rim
Village doesn't open till June so you won't have any facilities at the
top.
The problem you need to plan for is the weather, it changes by the hour
and I think they've recorded some of the yearly 44 FEET OF SNOW at
least once on every day of the year. Last September we started to climb
in spitting rain but in the 50s and got to the top in dense fog, sleet
and temps in the 30s. We didn't make it around the rim on Cycle Oregon,
too wet and cold.
You can find some books about the park at a library and visit the
park's Web site.
Mazama is a rekable and awesome geological feature. You've got to
see it.

The park is always open, but many of the roads and facilities are
closed during the winter.

Be careful as you go through Trail by car, on your way to the lake. It's a
notorious speed trap. My sister used to live there, and they got me a few
years ago. (Well, a lot of years ago, actually.)

For some useful and free maps, contact the Caltrans bike people at:

Bicycle Facilites Unit, MS1
CA State Dept Transportation
CalTrans
PO Box 942674
Sacramento, CA 94274-0001

and ask for the Bicycling Map for Caltrans District 2 and 3 ( and 1 and
4 if you want to swing out to the coast ).

Or you can call District 2 in Redding at 530-225-3426 and District 3 in
ysville at 530-714-4211. Ask for the Bicycle Coordinators.

Which route depend largely on how much time you have.
I live in Yreka, CA and you can email me for local info.

I can't help you to the Oregon border, but last year's Oregon Bike Ride
(http://www.oregonbicycleride.org/obr2004_gallery.html) and Cycle
Oregon (http://www.cycleoregon.com/co17.htm) both went to the rim of
Crater Lake. Oregon Bike Ride, in particular, approached from the
south, through Fort Klamath, along Highway 62. Very pretty. Either
organization may help finding good routes.

You're going next month? Check to make sure the roads are open- the
north entrance is typically closed by snow until June. The roads over
the Siskyous (southern Oregon) also get into the snow zone.

BTW: the tall goof in

is me.
