I think it is safe to say despite the assurances of the Troll that this
group is dead.

I am going through the motions of setting up a new recumbent newsgroup,
it will have a mild amount of moderation, only to weed out the trolls
and the spam.

My kill files currently reduce this group to around 6 to 8 subject
lines at any one time,
on topic posts are still full of Troll shit, time to close it down.

I saw "fukc" spray-painted onto a wall in Denk, so not everyone is
clear on the spelling.

"Focking" is no less rude than "fucking", but more humorous; therefore
the preferred usage on Usenet.

Nope, unlike you, I like to be crystal clear in what I mean. There are any
number of folks who will not know what is meant by "focking" whereas
everyone in the known universe will know exactly what is meant by "fucking,"
even one so dimwitted as you. After all, I am a student of the proverbial

and HAS NOT been a bully or put down those he disagrees with in an
acerbic, derogatory and/or sarcastic manner.

I am not familiar with "focking," but the substitute that I am familiar with
is "freaking." However, it does not make much sense to fool around with

Well Hells Bells, if he posted like I did he would soon be out of business
with his RCN. It is overpriced as it is and he does not need the kind of
grief ARBR would bring to it. Indeed, he is well-advised to stay the hell
off of this most disreputable newsgroup if he wants to keep RCN a going
concern.

I stopped learning new shit over 40 years ago. It is only mental midgets and
dwarfs like Mr. Sherman who feel the need to be engaged in lifelong
learning. Hell, if I were a clutz like him, I would want to keep on learning
too, but since I am Great I do not need to.

The artful dodger strikes again!

Mr. Sherman has never in his long history on this newsgroup ever had a
signature that was intelligent or indeed even made any sense. That is
because he is witless and artless. He should model himself after Ed Dolan
the Great who has always had the best signature of anyone ever to post to
Usenet.

Nonsense. Has Mr. Ed Dolan ever done original research on a cycling
topic and published a book on the subject? If so, it has certainly
escaped my attention. The person does exist, but has never (to the
best of my knowledge) posted with alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent being the

The sooner you get your moderated group up and running, the better. I can't
wait to be rid of you and your ilk. You do nothing but whine and bitch about
ARBR, never posting any worthwhile messages of your own which might
alleviate the tedium. The sooner you are gone, the better!

BROL works well if you enjoy nanny posts from the moderators that boil
down to "now children, behave better or we will have to have a 'time
out' ". Do you miss elementary school?

> I believe in free speech!

But apparently not on discussion forums.

> But how you use that right depends on each

If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. I really do
think you would be better off on BROL, where the moderators will
protect you from unpleasantness.

If someone wants to be verbally abusive to me on Usenet, I say "Bring
it On!"

The only rule that needs to be adhered to is, "What happens on Usenet
stays on Usenet".

The solution to trolls is more on-topic discussion, not whining about
the troll.

It seems most recumbent cyclists are not able or willing to stick up
for themselves, and have (or wish to) run to the protection of nanny
moderators.

I started using BROL last November. In that time, I've not seen one post
such as described here.

The fact is, some just wish to provide troll food. To each their own.
Filters work great, ram is cheap, and computers are really fast. A full

Roger, haven't you noticed the locked threads on BROL and the threads that
just disappear? I mean they just focking disappear. An innocent thread that
mentioned Jane Fonda and her Barbarella costume It happens and Mr. Bipolar
himself writes scolding missives to the Stepford Wives to behave or else!
Jeezus man don't you see what happens there? I guess not, because from the
tone of your scolding post here you're one of the ones who puts lip bruises
all over Bryan's ass. You gotta stop suckin up. How's he 'sposed to cram his
ass into his speed liner and go fast at Casa Grande with those bruises?

To be brutally honest, no one here really cares about your stupid kill
filters or your vain attempts to add a layer of censorship. You seem like
those fockking drama queens who have to announce that they are fed up and
are leaving the place. But no one cares. In fact I hope Ed answers your
nonsense and chews you a new asshole, because the one you have now is
plugged up with your head.

Getting back on topic: I took the trikeout for a ride today. The weather was
wonderful. A harbinger of real springtime. I am glad I bought a trike with
suspension, because the route was crap, having suffered the ravages of
winter and the suspension made the ride actually pleasant.

Roger, I apologize for going extremely overboard and the flame I shot at
you. It was uncalled for and crude. I get that way sometimes when my blood
glucose gets out of whack, but that is not much of an excuse for being so
churlish.

This is, after all, a place to talk of recumbency, and off putting language
is no way to entice more participation.

Never apologize son ... it is a sign of weakness. Especially do not
apologize to an asshole like Roger Zoul. It would be better to die than to
do that!

Leave assholes like him to me. I know how to skewer these types and you do
not have a clue. But still, your original message where you took him to task
was not bad at all. I respect you for it.

Roger Zoul is an execrable kill-filer who does not like a free and
unfettered newsgroup like ARBR. Screw him and his ilk all the way to hell

You obviously are not familiar with the code of the cowboy. I suggest you
immediately see all of John Wayne's movies (this will take some time as he
made hundreds of them) in order to get up to speed on what it is to be a
man. I urge you to give up your effete Eastern ways and become a lout like
all of us true Westerners.

Nothing good ever came out of the East. India is rife with religions and yet
they do not see anything wrong with letting people starve in the streets.
Well, that is the East for you.

At least the Jews always had some minimum morality, even if it can't hold a
candle to Christian morality. Christianity, by the way, is the only religion
that is capable of ever becoming the universal religion of all mankind. The
Muslims are essentially barbarians in every way imaginable. But I just love
this Christian tolerance for Muslims when all they ever want to do is to
kill anyone who is not a Muslim.

But I am sure Jeff Grippe does not mind if Muslims want to kill Jews. Hells
Bells, he probably thinks Jews deserve to be killed for daring to trespass
on Muslim lands. What is truly amazing is the Jewish rejection of the
Christian evangelical support for them. Folks, you do not get any stupider
than that. A dumb Jew is as dumb as it is possible for any human being to
get.

When you do an aside about ninjas, I will do an aside about st ass New
York Jews like you who do not defend your religion and do not defend the
State of Israel. There is nothing more contemptible in this world than a Jew
who will not defend his religion and stand up for Israel.

But Jeff Grippe is a coward as he proves every time he does not quote me in
full. I do not go on and on in my messages like some idiots do, so there is
never any excuse for not quoting me in full.

Here is the complete message which Jeff Grippe should have quoted:

Now, don't pick on an old man, scared of dying, no matter how
reprehensible his comments have become. This could happen to anyone
that has no friends or family left. He's regressing - this is the same

Here is Curtis Russell pretending to be wise. Of course, he is as dumb as a
stake. He proves that every time he posts anything to this newsgroup.

But more important than his dumbness is his cowardice. He is afraid to quote
me in any of his messages. Instead, he likes to commiserate with another
dumbbell by the name of Jeff Grippe. Well dumbbells always have two poles,
don't they?

Curtis Russell is going to die just as surely as any other creature who has
ever lived. Jeff has already come close to dying, so I don't have to explain
this to him. But Curtis Russell is an asshole supreme and a coward besides.
But let's face it, have you ever known anyone from yland who was not an
asshole. That whole state is fucked up and always has been. It is basically
just an annex to Washington, DC. Fuck him and all his ilk!

Interestingly, John Wayne made the comment, "Never apologize, it's a
sign of weakness' in one of the Ford movies in the middle of his long
career ("She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Nathan Brittles), but he apologizes
in his last movie, The Shootist, to Lauren Bacall. So even John Wayne
doesn't really pay attention to the line in one of his five best roles
(as was Nathan Brittles IMO and in balance).

Actually, the only good movie John Wayne ever made in his life was that last
one, "The Shootist." All his other movies were nothing but pure good old
American crap. "The Quiet Man" was not bad either come to think of it, even
though it played on every Irish stereotype in existence.

It amuses me how Curtis Russell of Odenton, yland is too frightened to
even quote any of my message. Of all the vices, cowardice is the greatest.
At least Jeff Grippe will put my message at the bottom of his. He is only
half a coward.

I urge one and all to observe the posts of Tom Sherman. He has forever been
correct in the form of his posts to this newsgroup. He edits too severely,
but that is his only fault.

True. We do share a common bond, don't we!

So, are you riding this weekend? I've been getting around 60 miles on
Saturdays, but I won't tomorrow (travel). Perhaps I'll get them in on
Sunday.

I'm just a fat old guy and sixty mile rides are something I fondly remember
doing in the distant past. While my mind is willing the body isn't quite up
to the task anymore. Beside in these parts it's still mostly frigid and
buying enough hand/foot warmers to completely cover my body with chemical
heaters would deplete the 'daddy needs new Stelvios' fund.

I might get out and endure the wonders of global warming for a half hour or
fortyfive minutes to have an excuse to not ride the trainer and further
damage my brain due to excessive exposure to daytime t.v. Frozen extremeties
are preferable to dead brain cells.

I'm curious. How old are you and what do you weigh? And where abouts do you
live?

Me either. I have one! :)

Seriously, I don't see a lot of people my size (~225-235) who like to ride
long distance. I was just wondering how true that is. I think a lot of what
people may attribute to age and weight has more to do with life outlook,
etc. That's all I was fishing for.

Jeff is right about what is a reasonable distance to cover in one day. I
have always hated centuries, but anywhere from 50 to 65 miles has always
seemed about right to me.

A century will take me about 10 to 12 hours to do. This includes many rest
stops and meals of course. Well, that is too much time to spend on a bike in
one day, even on a recumbent. A masochist I never was.

I have so far taken seven (7) final stormy farewells from ARBR with much
cursing and slamming of doors, and there will no doubt be many more to come.
After all, parting is such sweet sorrow that you want to do it as often as
possible.

But no one cares. In fact I hope Ed answers your
> nonsense and chews you a new asshole, because the one you have now is
> plugged up with your head.

Is it possible I have got an ally in Gotbent? I do agree with him and Tom
Sherman that we do not want ARBR to become a moderated forum, although I
have stated many times previously that a moderated forum is the ONLY way to
go if you want to be serious about anything.

ARBR is for fun and games and I know that is how Tom Sherman and Gotbent see
it too. We can occasionally be serious too, but that is not our forte. Since
any and all idiots can post to this forum we should never make the mistake
of taking ARBR seriously.

My rule of thumb with regard to this forum is to have some fun. In fact, if
you are not having any fun on ARBR, then you should leave. We are all older
men here and we do not need or want anyone to baby-sit us. We want to be
able to say whatever we want however we want and let the chips fall where
they may.

You should see the streets here in Worthington! They are all cracked up and
full of potholes, which will never be smooth again. It is why I am in favor
of low pressure klunker tires and don't care about going fast. Aye, the
world is full of messed up streets littered with potholes.

Livingston Cellars Red Rose is the only wine in the universe that does not

Anyone can live in a mansion with servants to take care of things. But it
takes genius like Me to live in this old house and survive the rigors of a

Mr. Sherman posts all the time messages which make my blood pressure go

Yes, others like Joel only like to dish out verbal abuse, but they do not
like to take it. Such sissies ought to get to BROL and leave ARBR forever.

The above is very well said by Mr. Sherman and I agree with him 100%. Hells
Bells, it is no fun at all to observe proper decorum all the time. I am here
on ARBR to have some fun. What the rest of you are doing here alludes me

Everything is in ideal shape-both tie-rods are tight and straight, and
all 4 locks never loosen. I believe that it might be the folding
frame joints moving. One large attachment is the hinge, and the other
is similar to a stove bolt to hold it when swung out to ride. I
suspect that stove bolt might be moving. Being so new- it makes no
sense to me about worn or crooked parts that work fine one minute and
act up in a few more minutes.

When folded, the tie rods must be disconnected, so Loc-Tite is out!
The heim joints are attached with a bolt and butterfly nut for easy
removal when folding and rarely vibrates loose, and if so, a quick
twist is easy. I suspected them first, and tested them loose and
tight- same alignment. Just a mystery! Nice looking mystery though,
I think! ;-)

I have several factory photos of this trike, but only 2 of my trike
(which are useless for close-up front end mechanics). The factory web
site will probably have more photos- JM Recumbents (I do not have the
URL handy). On the site is a comment that this trike will be tested
by BROL. Someday!

is time to contact the builder of your trike for guidance. When I had

What if there was a poster who was a true expert on the newsgroup
subject (to the point of having done original research and publishing
a book on an important subtopic) who has posted thousands of relevant
and useful posts. Yet this same poster can also turn into a bully,
putting down those he disagrees with in an acerbic, derogatory and/or
sarcastic manner. Would this person be banned from this "low
moderation" newsgroup?

Note: Any resemblance to a real life person is not coincidental.

Personally, I've never been for banning anyone. I think that ignoring the
trolls and keeping up the on-topic conversation is just fine. I don't know
anything about who would be banned from what.

What I do know is that if the person is a bully and is acerbic and
derogatory, then they are engaging in troll behavior.

Personally I don't care who he or she is and how much they know. I would
expect that they should and must follow proper decorum as everyone else.
Let's face it, there are rude and abusive people everywhere, but that
doesn't mean that we have to accept that form of behavior. BROL is
moderated and it works very well, what makes this any different? I
believe in free speech! But how you use that right depends on each
individual case. I don't care if someone doesn't agree with me but I
don't have to take verbal abuse, and neither should anyone else.

butbutbut [1], what about the gray areas? It is all too easy to step
over the line and over moderate a discussion, where the moderators
take on condescending and/or authoritarian airs. I believe there are
sufficient well known examples of this that I need not post an
example.

You seem to be using "troll" as a noun, e.g., "Following his purchase
of a bottle of Livingston Cellars Red Rose, the troll retreated to his
4th Avenue hovel". There is also use of "troll" as a verb, e.g. Johnny
Sunset trolled alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent by contending that an ISO
305-mm front wheel combined with an ISO 406-mm rear wheel is the ideal
combination for a user friendly lowracer. The latter is on-topic, and
would not by logic be considered disruptive or destructive to the
group, yet it is still a troll, since it is attempting to elicit
responses.

It's all subjective as to who/waht etc. is a troll. However, if
there's someone who you feel is a PITA and does ARBR harm, and
repsonding to them only encourages them to continue to be a PITA
and cause ARBR harm, if you want ARBR to be a viable, useful place
it's probably a good idea not to respond to them.

Just act in your longer term self-interest. Nothing more, nothing
less.

Tom, you are selecting parts of the def that you want to and ignoring
others. It works great in debates or politics but here it only serves to
obfuscate.

"To deliberately post derogatory or inflammatory commenats to (laundry list)
in order to bait other users into responding"

All usenet messages are an invitation to respond. If you post something that
is not derogatory or inflammatory then you are not being a troll or engaging
in troll like behavior.

But you know this already. Don't take the second half of the sentence and
ignore the first half. Talking about ISO 406 mm rear wheels on a lowracer is
not trolling. If you were to say instead "Only idiots and morons would use
ISO 406 mm rear wheels on a low racer." and then follow it up with some
rek about where the poster is from or their ethnicity, political views,
or gender. Then you've trolled.

In the noun sense (not nonsense) a troll is a grumpy figure that lives under
bridges and eats little children, or some such folk lore. In the good old
days when I owned a two cycle, three cylinder, oil injected SAAB 96, I had a
decal supplied by SAAB that said...Made in Trollhatton by Trolls, and I had
a little troll doll hanging from my rearview mirror. It was three inches
high and had blue hair and a pot belly; not very grumpy at all.

In the verb sense, troll is something fishermen do with small quiet motors
on their boats to slowly drag their bait and attract fish.

In the Usenet sense the verb part seems to be to toss out a post to attract
discussion and the noun sense attracts grumpy children eaters not only to
take the bait, but to attack the fisherman. Usenet is a bastion of free
speech, but not so a dictum of decorum and friendliness, but the
participants can be decorious and friendly. We can ignore posts and posters.
We can choose to be part of a friendly community and we can choose
participate in kind.

What helps to maintain civility is to accept posters foibles. Critism of
style is largely useless. Maintaining a civil discourse is not necessarily
easy, but that is the measure of Usenet's power and attractiveness as
opposed to the Stepford wifeness of moderated boards. Those have their
place. Personal attacks and verbal denigration are enforced by the
particular prejudices of the moderator. Many participants seem to be overly
sycophantic and react like Bushian Republicans to any deviation from their
preconceptions of the high prupose of living the recumbent life. Personally
I visit there, but then I like to visit here where I can let my hair down,
drink a beer with friends and pass that spliff around.

It is very oblivious to me and most others here that the Troll finds
delight in the destruction of the news group, and others have just stood
there and allowed it to happen by answering him, instead of blocking him
as I have done. This news group could remain alive, if you all did the
same. And between you and me if we all would grow up and not be baited
into a useless debate over a lowlife then we would all be better off. I
use BROL, but if there was another moderated group I would join, just to
hear other benters views on subjects.

Tom you really don't need an example of a Troll do you? If it isn't
obvious to you it is to most of us here. If someone on there own tries
to destroy conversation or berates other users he is a troll! better yet
here is the Webopedia def: (v.) (1) To deliberately post derogatory or

If the group gets shut down, shouldn't that be in the perview of it's
originator, M*rt*n Kr**g, the king of cross posting. It is his group, not
Catrike Buck of the U, which is a bit ironic as M*rt*n has been in my kill
file since the first week I suscribed to the group in "99.

No, once you start a non-moderated group, it belongs to anyone that
posts to it - and to no one. FWIW, I haven't seen a posting from He
That Will Not Be Mentioned in a very long time. His ch/ride across
the U.S. didn't quite live up to the hyperbole either.

And I wait for his two volume autobiography, to be released with an
Old and a New Testament...

Quick detour for alignment (!) I had the trike adjusted perfectly- 0
toe-in, 0 toe-out with my weight for frame flex. Went great for about
2 miles. Went in my own driveway- that bump knocked it right out of
alignment- coasted about 10 feet- stopped dead ( should have rolled
backwards due to grade but it did not move).

Loosened all 4 nuts (hein joint on the L & R ends) turned the end
right where it was in the first place- aligned! Tighten everything
up, ride a few more easy miles, hit a pothole- slowed way down. That
time I was too far to get yardsticks to measure front/back of wheels,
so I guessed- just loosed and removed one side. Twisted it, put it
back together- good enough to get home.

Owners manual says how important alignment is, and to check it often,
but 0 toe is great- if it will stay there!

It sounds like a thread on one of the connections is loose and or
stripped. So when ever you hit a bump it pulls out. Maybe a bad tie-rod
end or tie-rod.

Are the tie rods straight, as in not bent? Do you use blue Loc-Tite on the
threads? If jam nuts are tight and the threads have Loc-Tite on them, there
shouldn't be any change to toe-in unless the unobvious is happening. Loose
king pin bearings, loose axle nuts, bent tie rods, worn Heim joints (ball
joints...spherical ball ends), loose or worn headset bearings on the stem,
etc.

Can you post a link to a photo of your trike so we can get a better idea of
the front end mechanism and geometry?

I invite all your friends who don't like it here to join with you and
leave the group to never return. Take with you the people who like to
write nasty poetry about other people and think it is all good and
fair to do it because they give that person the name of troll. Take
your Johnny jackboots(nocom) with you too, we don't need dumb shits to
mess up our group.
Don't like it here then leave. It is just that simple. We clear cut
in the forest so that new seedlings can be planted. I just got a stihl
sm260 and it cuts damn fast.

Well, I have joined moderated groups. As I found out; I had
inadvertedly posted here on ARBR and I found my posts all over the web
(and usually out of context) in several groups; so I just joined each
one with a different alias.

I figured that the best 'killfile' was between my ears and I rather
enjoy comments from "way out in left field" (and relish my own
posession of my humor and/or controllable sanity). There is a limit
to postings, and when encountered - I just imagine an "ignore" button.

Then I have the energy to go outside and swear at that damn
alignment.... >:-(

ECO (engineering change order?)

Probably the reason you found your messages propagating like the diaspora is
that you replied to a massively cross-posted thread. You can view the
posting destination in the newreader and use click and drag editing to
remove the destinations not desired to keep the reply to the relevent
group(s).

Just curious about the alignment problem; have you been able to contact the
manufacturer for instructions on resolving the problem?

Eco! Still didn't get the thing aligned? Are you supposed to have toe-in
or out? This adjustment should be cut and dry, but there might be
something we are missing.

You are going to set up a moderated list on the basis that you can't handle
the existence of one troll? No wonder usenet is dying.

I only lurk here because, whilst I love my Greenspeed trike, I don't really
have a lot to say about it and frankly, would rather spend time riding it
than writing about riding it.

I'm sure there are enough posters lurking here that could and would answer a
question if I needed to ask one, as I would happly give an answer or an
opinion if someone asked for advice or an opinion that I felt I could assist
with.

Would I join a moderated usenet list? Nope. There are plenty of web forums,
mail lists and e-groups that do that job more than adequately if censorship
is your thing.

I don't think I'd join a moderated group either although I could probably be
accused of being one of the biggest troll baiters. BROL really does the
trick for moderated bent talk. This group is far from dead especially
lately. I think that the trolls can be confined and that good conversation
can occur around them.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I have been using my filters to ignore
the Troll.
