Subject: What is a Troll?

I do not care what anyone else in the world thinks a troll is. I KNOW what a
troll is because I was taught by an expert troll - Ed Gin of ARBR.

A troll has nothing but malice intended. He demonstrates this by posting a
single message over and over on as many threads as possible. When others
object, he calls them every name in the book preferably resorting to
obscenities and sexual innuendoes right off the bat. Moreover, he never uses
his real name but instead uses dozens of false names. He will also use the
names of other members of the group including their addresses fraudulently
in his posts so as to confuse everyone as to who is saying what. He is able
to get away with all these shenanigans because he has engaged a newsreader
service which will ensure that he remain anonymous. He is consistently vile
and the one thing he will NEVER do is to respond to anyone ever. Such a
troll is more like a machine than a human being.

Those of you who think a troll is anything other than what I have described
above are living in dream land. Any troll can destroy any newsgroup if he
devotes all his time and effort to it. That is what happened to ARBR and it
can happen to you too. Trolls are essentially criminal morons. That is the
one thing you have to know about them.

What Ed Dolan in his ignorance fails to realize is that there are
several people who are MUCH MORE LIKELY the author of the "Johnny
NoCom" posts than Ed Gin.

Furthermore, Ed Dolan has wrongly accused Ed Gin of making posts that
were made by someone else - something I know as a FACT BEYOND
REASONABLE DOUBT.

Who gives a damn about that? They were all in cahoots with one another.
Freaking Monkey Islanders all! And you weren't much better. You are judged
by the company you keep.

Which were which? And who cares at this late stage? ARBR was destroyed and
you did nothing to prevent it when it was in your power to do something
about it. That was and is the sticking point with me. I don't give a damn
about human scum like the Monkey Islanders, but I never put you in that
class.

I truly gave up on ARBR after Mr. Sherman was missing in action. It was at
that point that I realized that these freaking newsgroups were nowhere.
There was no group loyalty or cohesion at all. Screw it! The group was not
worthy of me. I was in under my head.

I suspect only Tom Sherman (although he is not Great like Me) knows what
succinct means without having to look it up in a dictionary. The educational
level of these newsgroups is at the 8th grade, everyone having wasted their
high school years pursuing girls. That is the downside to coeducation.

What we have here is and example of the pot calling the kettle black.
Ed Dolan uses not only uncommon words but even Latin phrases (read
words from a virtually dead language). Succinct is not very uncommon.
I am reasonably certain that Ed has underestimated the vocabulary of
the readers here.

Did anyone else notice the huge number of Usenet posts which comprised
entire paragraphs which used words in complete and grammatically correct
sentences which nonetheless conveyed absolutely no meaning which were posted
in the weeks and months before 11 Sep 2001, and which have not been seen

There is not one person in a hundred who knows what a troll is. Jim refuses
to do his homework on the subject but unless and until he does he will be
doing nothing but blowing in the wind. The comparison must include what Ed
Gin did that Ed Dolan has never done.

I am not interested in the standard definitions and descriptions of trolls.
I am way beyond that elementary nonsense. I KNOW what a real troll is and
what they are capable of. Anything other than that is child's play and not
worth mentioning.

In a sense anyone who posts a message to Usenet is trolling for a response.
None of us write just to see ourselves in print. We want responses from
others. That kind of trolling is of the essence for all newsgroups.

By the way, being off-topic on your own thread and being contentious, even
insulting, has absolutely nothing to do with being a troll. To think that it
does ks you as a simpleton.

You really do have to study the posts of Ed Gin (Johnny NoCom) on ARBR from
two winters ago to get an idea of a real troll and not all these imaginary
trolls which don't amount to a hill of beans.

You will never have your ISP account suspended for "Trolling"

There are different types of "bait" and different fishing techniques,
however.

ISPs may revoke accounts for many reasons. Most have terms
of use that prohibit use of their service not only for illegal purposes,
but also for various other inappropriate behaviour including abuse,
harassment, vulgarity, obscenity, etc...

For historical and practical reasons, few ISPs are concerned with
posts to alt.* news groups.

I do not go along with that. I can take and give any amount of insults as
long as the insults are responsive. It is the unresponsive mindlessness of
trolls that bothers me the most.

Yes, you are more likely to get your account suspend for vile language than
anything else. I think only threats need to be reported to the police. I
will tolerate almost anything except threats.

Well, I think we all know a real troll when we encounter one. Thankfully
they are few and far between. In all my years on ARBR, there has only been
one troll who constituted a danger to the group. In fact, he pretty much
destroyed the group.
