Subject: Who Killed ARBR?

Those of you who only belong to large newsgroups think you need never worry
about your group being killed, but it is the easiest thing in the world to
kill a small newsgroup. ARBR was more or less thriving up to a couple of
years ago when a single person showed his ugly face and proceeded to kill
the group. He was a criminal vandal troll by the name of Ed Gin (Johnny
NoCom - just one of his many user names).
What did this criminal vandal troll do? He trampled on every thread with a
spam type of message and cast scurrilous obscenities at everyone. He used
names not his own and forged other names not his. He NEVER repsonded to
anyone else, just went on and and on with his own insane monologue. He used
proxies and newsreaders that insured anonymity so that no one could ever get
a complaint registered against him. It would have taken a police detective
to track this scoundrel down. Don't believe me? Just go to the Google
archives for ARBR from 2 winters ago and you will see the destruction taking
place.
Everyone got disgusted and left ARBR for mainly BROL, a moderated forum. I
have absolutely nothing against moderated forums and believe they are the
wave of the future. All of Usenet is doomed precisely because it is
unmoderated. Frankly, I got disgusted myself with ARBR too because of the
fact that a single criminal vandal troll could so easily destroy it.
So what do I see on the other newsgroups? I see nothing but chat rooms. No
one will post anything at all seriously anymore because of all the idiots,
morons and cretins who infest the groups. Even Tom Sherman, formerly the
heart and soul of ARBR, will no longer post substantial messages because he
knows the group has died and gone to hell.
All of this just because of one criminal vandal troll! If it can happen to
ARBR, it can happen to your group too no matter how large. Be warned!

Either you have to brush up on your reading comprehension skills or I
will have to dumb things down for you. We are largely defined by what
we do. You are what you are. This isn't about preference of style and
no one gives style point for trolls although degree of difficulty is
another matter.

this issue under the rug (read dismiss the accusation or shed the
label). Comparing trolls, as you continue to suggest, is akin to
comparing apples and oranges. They are both fruit but come in different
flavors. All trolls are not "created" equal, but the difference that
distinguish them from one another is merely a matter of form (read
style) rather than substance. A troll by any other name (instigator) is

NO ... there are just Trolls. There is nothing either explicit or

thing, which is more than I can stand to read.
A newsgroup can have a lot of ON-TOPIC discussion, AND still be
contentious, e.g. rec.bicycles.tech.

Nope, I KNOW it is NOT true! Go check the ARBR Google Archives for Feb. and
ch from a couple of years ago and you will see what happened at a glance.
The group was doing just fine until Ed Gin destroyed it.

Without a doubt. I still have the digest sent to me, but why even post
here when one self appointed "god" dominates all conversations. When I
want to post something about our favorite hobby, I use BROL, because ED
cannot do is number there.

The group was as you described it above until I showed up and changed it
forever. Believe me, it was anything but self-ingratiating once I took hold
of it. It became a very prickly place and everyone had to stay on their
toes.
Ed Gin's destruction of the group was not motivated by anything the group
was or did. I think he did what he did just to see if it could be done. The
group was very poor at defending itself which of course made it all that
much easier for him. What can you do when everyone turns tail and runs. I
fought the good fight, but I could not become a criminal like him.
The moral of the story is that one bad apple can destroy the barrel, but we
have always known that much, haven't we?

Perry is onto something here. The fact is that I do not get along at all
well with conservatives. I get along much better with liberal left wing nuts
and screwballs like him and Tom Sherman. However, in this day and age,
national security concerns trump everything else and the conservatives own
that issue.
