Subject: 10-speed rear derailleur with an 8-speed chain?
Will this combo be ok with friction shifters, or will
the 8-spd chain be too wide for the rd cage?

No, it will be fine..I have used 10s RDers on many 8s systems with no
problem or modification.

Chain is too wide for cassette and likely the rd cage.
