hi, I have an older (1990)cannondale criterium, it has 126 MM spacing
for the rear wheel(6speed freewheel shimano). the bike shop has a
130mm, but they don't want to sell it to me. I am having trouble
finding one.
Can I make the 130 work with aluminum frame?

or does someone have an inexpensive source for 126,

the current wheel has a hop and several rounded spole nipples,
thanks dan

FWIW, I've been riding a 1988 (or so) bonded aluminum Trek 1400,
originally spaced at 126mm, with a 130mm rear for over seven years
now. I know this is only one data point and it's not a C'dale.

BTW, a number of years ago I did the trig to figure out what adding
4mm to the rear spacing did to the parallelism of the rear dropouts.
As I recall the difference was probaly well withing the tolerences a
frame builder would accept. In a responding article Sheldon Brown
backed me up. You can probably google the thread.

No problem, he'll be out golfing all weekend. Just kidding! ;-)

A minivan driver on a cell phone "retired" his 7-speed bike late last
year, leaving him with extra wheels and a separated shoulder. We're
just trying to find good homes for the stuff he couldn't transfer over
to his new bike. In fact, he could probably sell the downtube
shifters and rear derailleur if you need them, I'm not sure what brand/
model they are.

My husband has two 126 mm 7-speed freewheel rear wheels for sale:

1. Mavic Open Pro Silver rim, Campy Record hub, 36 14g spokes, tied
and soldered on the drive side, brass nipples, takes Shimano
freewheel. This wheel was built for strength and durability. The hub
was overhauled four years ago, and the wheel was built 1.5 years ago
and ridden for less than one year. $100 plus shipping.

2. Mavic Open 4 CD rim, Phil Wood hub, 32 14/15g spokes, aluminum
nipples. Includes a 7-speed Dura Ace 12-28 freewheel. This wheel was
built lighter for recreational riding. $150 plus shipping.

Both wheels were handbuilt by master wheelsmith Terry Shaw in Santa
Clara, CA.

Drop me an email if you're interested.

Leather, with brass hardware, of course!

would be available, cheap.)

Hey now, those are the most erotic mudflaps I've ever experienced!

Not a tough call. A $30 rim taped to the original, 2.5 brewskis, and
an hour of tedium.

Some reason not to put a rim + spokes on your present hub?
If not, can they build you a 126 wheel or change the axle spacing?

This is not a conundrum or a crisis, merely the first wheel in the rack
had the wrong hub spacing.

The bike shop had the 130mm for $40. just about perfect. But the look
on the guys face, and he told me it was a bunch of work, and to look
elsewhere, he said he would have to redish the wheel, basically he
wasn't going to help. My friend then tried on a helmet and another
sales guy said "you won't look good no matter what helmet you put on."

I am really just thinking of putting the 130mm in there, OR I will try
some other shops and maybe have them build the wheel.

thanks

Jeez - don't bother me, I'm working.

Find some shop that wants to be in business.

That is what I would say,
but I am notoriously bad at retail sales.

Well, THERE'S your problem. Find a better shop.

I don't know if you'd consider it inexpensive, but:

http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/Wheels.asp

"Seven Speed Shimano 105 SC Wheelsets
I found some 32 hole Shimano 105 SC hubsets recently. They are brand
new, have 126mm rear axles, and take seven speed Hyperglide
cassettes..."

but you have to buy a whole wheelset.

Tough call. The easiest/cheapest thing would be to just get a new rim
with the same ERD and replace the bad spoke nipples. How bad is the
hop?

Or try another shop and see if you can get a decent 126mm 7-speed
freehub wheel.

How about just replacing the rim?

Try eBay. I've had good luck keeping on of my road bikes equipped
with wheels, freewheels and other older components that bike shops
can't afford to keep in stock.

Back during the transition to 130mm 8sp wheels, I knew several people
who wedged 130mm wheels into 126mm spaced C'dales, not as easy as with
a steel frame, but doable.. In fact, the early Shimano 130mm 8sp
freehubs came with rounded locknuts to ease the wedging.

OTOH, you (or the shop) could respace the new wheel to 126mm.
