Subject: 9 Speed SRAM grip shift on LX 8spd rear?
I'm trying to get grip shifters for my beater to replace the now
defunct rapid fire since I prefer grip anyway. It has an 8spd setup,
but I'm seeing cheap 9 speed X.7 stuff around. Can I use these
shifters on an 8-speed setup?

Thanks,

Dan

I just got word from a friend that he's got a set of 9 speed SRAM
attack shifters that I can have. Since I need a chain anyway I'm
going to add a cassette to the order and go 9 speed. The new question
is which 9-speed cassette, but that's a different thread entirely.

Thanks for the reply.

I doubt it. The difference between Shimano 8 and 9 speed cog spacing is
0.45mm, which is enough to throw things off quite a bit by the time you
get to the end of the cassette. You could use a #2 Shiftmate, but that
would negate the "cheap" part unless you have it lying around already.

If you're really trying to do it on the cheap, stick with 8 speed
shifters. Otherwise, you could change to 9 speed by buying a new chain
and cassette in addition to the shifter. The derailer and wheel you
already have should work fine.

All this assumes that you're talking about a Shimano compatible shifter
and not an ESP model, which will only work with SRAM ESP derailers.
