The roads were fairly quiet those days, once you left the bedlam of Bangkok. Will be a lot more cars now. Also noticed a disparity between the route description (all Highway 1) and the map which heads up Highway 3 between Palmerston North and Hamilton. Less traffic and hills on 3 though - so a reasonable route. It's a pity he couldnt nip across from Auckland to Santiago and get to the US via the Pacific Highway - then he could have completed the extra 6000 miles required to make it a 'real' circumnavigation.
