Back in the rear of your shop, you might have a set of nice 36-hole,
27" aluminum alloy rims suitable for a tandem. They might even be
built for a 6-cog freewheel.

If so, then get back to me. (swsm1th@hotmail.com)

Bye, now.

I can't help but think that this 650B schtick will, in the long term,
be Grant's demise. They might see a slight uptick in sales to 'the
converted' in the short run, but that's about it. And then there's
that stupid new mountain bike..

And, at those low prices, it might make sense to buy a second pair to
have in 'reserve'.

Let us know how the wheels work out.

From the Rivendell website:
Folks who like the idea of a versatile bike, but canšt
let go of their racing fantasies. If you stay home on
July weekends watching your heroes challenge the hills
in France, and your dream vacation is dressing like
them and riding those same routes and dreaming of
cheering throngs, then the A. Homer Hilsen is not your
bike.

(Also, don't get it if you need a bike smaller than
57cm. The AHH comes in sizes 57, 59. 61, 63, 65, and
67. If you require smaller than a 57, get a Saluki or
Bleriot. They have all of the A. Homer Hilsen's
versatility and ride, but use smaller, 650B wheels.
Everything good we say about the comfort and
versatility of the A. Homer Hilsen applies to the
Saluki and Bleriot, too. Not to take anything away from
the A. Homer Hilsen; but the other two bikes are
designed with exactly the same values, for the same
comfort, and for the same riding. They just have
smaller wheels.)

I'm too small to ride big wheels like the big kids.
Now I see the light. Time to downsize those 630's.

That's because I'm a sloppy webmaster.

Velocity Synergy 27-inch is a brand new product. Built the first one

The ISO 630-mm Synergy is not yet on the Velocity USA site:

I was just pointing the OP to what they asked about. The rest is their
decision. Perhaps they have been using 36H previously, with good
results; who knows.

That said, the 40H and 48H rims that Nashbar is selling cheap are the
better choice.

once upon I had the good fortune to watch a sidecar race in the rain
at turn 5 Road Atlanta.
the idea of a high speed downhill tire failure crash on a tandem is
interesting.

36 holes for a tandem? That had better be a lightweight team, or else
an exceptionally strong rim.

Most of the stock rims for tandems nowadays are 36 hole. It bugged me
at first, being used to 48; however, we haven't had any issues on a
stock Ibis machine... but then, we're a conservative, recreational
team. The old Paramount I'm restoring had 48 and they're *heavy*. I
had toyed with building a second set of wheels, but I think I'll just
lace in new 48 spoke rims since Nashbar has 'em.

If the couple consisted of a 55-kgf man and a 40-kgf woman, 36-spoke
tandem wheels would not be ridiculous.

I have been running 36-spoke tandem wheels for years... granted,
they're on a fat-tired, 26" wheel, which makes a difference, of
course. I have not tried it on a traditional road bike.

The bike on which I'm working has Campy 48 hole hubs (yeah, I had
never seen any either) and steel rims... and they weigh a *ton*... OK,
less than a ton, but you get the idea. I'm trying to balance keeping
the original Paramount equipment with having something that's
basically ridable... I'm not married to the idea of a 36 spoke wheel.
I didn't think I'd ever find a 27", 48 spoke rim; however (praise
Nashbar), I see they're available.

Odd combination. Try a magnet on those Weinmann Alesa shiny rims if they
are original.
Why would anyone rebuild a Record hub on a crappy steel rim? Why bother?

Yeah, now there's some great advice: ditch a somewhat hard to find
wheel/tire size that your bike is already setup for in favor of a
*harder to find*, oddball wheel/tire size with only a few relatively
expensive choices available. Then, go change out your brakes in hope
of finding something that works with your new weird wheels. Wow.....

Ozark, you got it exactly right today.
700C- cheaper, more available, the same benefits ( slightly smaller
diameter means slightly wider tire clearance) but 650B? Pointless.

There's people happy to sell you anything, included some outmoded 27"

One man's "outmoded" equipment is another man's antique! It's an
early Paramount tandem under restoration and I wanted to stay with 27"
rims for aesthetic reasons... 'course, by that logic, I'd keep the
cast iron rims; however, I'm not *that* aesthetic!

Yeah, I ain't knockin' it, mind you... and I know that a Bendix
2-speed "kick back" is *so*... like... you know... last century, man.

Isn't it weird what people will think is cool? I mean, whoda thunk
that the GM Corvair would be a hot item today? There are whole shops
dedicated to obsolete bicycles. (Does "Memory Lane" have a web page?)

But, then... friction shifters still work today after being on the
road for 30 years. Do you suppose that any of today's equipment will
still be running in 2037?

Replacement is mandatory before your 22nd century ride, or flatting is
guaranteed.

Nashbar rim is an Alex x404, good enough for utility bikes, but both
it and the Sun are single wall. Probably not the best for a tandem.

Yeah, that's more like it for a tandem.

Do you want rims, or complete wheels?

If it's 27" rims you seek, Nashbar has several at good prices:

Sun AT18 36H -$9.99ea

Nashbar branded 36H - $12.99 ea

Sun CRT16/Chinook 40H and 48H -$14.95

That isn't bad, is it. I quit looking at Nashbar some time back. I
see a pair there, though, that will serve my needs. Seems like I
looked once and found only 700c... not that there's anything *wrong*
with it.
