I have some yellowed Campy brake hoods that are otherwise in good
shape. Does anyone have any experience with bleaching them white?

Thanks,
JG

Try squinting. Whenever I have a purely cosmetic problem that no one
else will notice or care about (with furniture, car, bike, house, me),
I finding that squinting makes it go away or at least makes it better.
I can lose five pounds by squinting. My wife looks 10 years younger
when I squint. God gave us squinting. Use it. -- Jay Beattie.

I beleive I'm dealing with sunlight yellowing rather than dirt... I
thought I saw some vague references to bleaching here, and was hoping
someone has some experience. The alternative appears to be scrubbing
the yellowed surface away...;-(

Try a Scotch-Brite kitchen cleaning pad with a little bit of water and
dish detergent.

You could try a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Also a petroleum based
solvents like paint thinner or naphtha.

Be careful with these as they could damage the rubber in higher
concentrations.

There's a product called Rubber Renew; you might try that. I got some (or
something like it) a number of years ago for reel-to-reel capstan rollers,
it worked quite well. Had a very strong odour of oil of wintergreen, as I
recall...

Bleach would NOT be a good idea; neither would H2O2, I think.

Hey, I shouldda thought of that! Mechanic's hand cleaner is wild
stuff, fairly mild on your skin, but it dissolves the funkiest grime.

Automotive whitewall cleaner might work too!

Bleach isn't going to help (unless they are moldy!). Try a hand cleaner
and a fingernail brush followed by ArmorAll or similar.

I'd try something a little more benign first, like oxygen type
cleanser or a soak in hydrogen peroxide. If that didn't work, maybe a
soak in a 10% bleach solution? Maybe I'm totally off base and bleach
is harmless to that material. Who knows? Start conservative and move
up till you get to the acids and full hazmat suit.

I have heard of bleaching teeth! Not brake hoods. :)
