Subject: Campy Gran Sport Hub Cones ?

I have a small flange front Campy Gran Sport hub. One of the cones has some degradation. Are these available? Do they match any other Campy hub cones? Thanks, Bob (a non-Campy kind of guy).

Original Gran Sport parts antedate the NT hubs, but during a time when the NT hubs were in production, they were part of the then-current Gran Sport group. Catalogs list part number 25 as the front cones for hubs of both periods. The catalog pages I gave a link to show a GS group including NT hubs: http://www.campyonly.com/history/1974/gran_sport.pdf Tom Ace

A Record road QR front hub had the same axle, but different cones (part 25R). They took different balls as well; Tipo front had 10 3/16" balls per side, Record front used 7/32". Nevertheless, since both used the 3/16" bearings, the cones would probably work fine. -- David L. Catalogue 17 says that campy GS used 10 x 3/16 balls in the front, Record used 9 x 7/32 balls in the front. I've not seen GS cones as spare parts although you might try www.campyoldy.com or mercian cycles in the UK. I've seen plenty of Record cones as spare parts as the pista group STILL seems to be using Record cones. Wwwcyclery on ebay carries cones I believe. You can probably change from 10 x 3/16 balls to 9 x 7/32 balls and make a record cone work. Another solution is to get a complete campy-compatible axle set from www.biketoolsetc.com, about $8-$10. They are made in Taiwan. Your threads will go from 26tpi to M10 but you won't care because the axle set contains axle & cones & washers & locknuts & everything. - Don Gillies San Diego, CA

I have a Tipo/Record Frankenhub I put together 20+ years ago: Tipo body, skewer, axle, Record cups and cones. Front hub only, it was for a tandem with a Phil Wood rear. Dunno if you can get the Record cups anymore, and a special tool is required to remove the old ones, but it built up really nicely and has held up well all these years. ISTR the bearing surface on the Tipo cups/cones were markedly less smooth than the Records. Don't know if such a modification would make any economic sense with current prices; it must have for me way back when because I was on a student budget at the time. Mark J.

Not the Record front cone which uses a different (7/32") ball size. The NT/GS cones are available to fit your existing axle. Or use a complete Shimano or Suzue axle set (same 3/16" balls) if it just needs to be functional. Get new gr.25 balls and note that cleanliness counts. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971

I'm pretty certain that campy made only 1 type of cone from 1950 until 1990, the "campagnolo" cone. There are many sources for these online including wwcyclery on ebay. Anotheer solution is to get a complete campy-compatible axle set from www.biketoolsetc.com, about $8-$10. Certainly not true, given that the lower-end hubs used 3/16" bearings, while the Record (etc.) front hubs use 7/32". Also, I have a FB hub from maybe the 40s, which is what became the Campy hub, and those bearings are really little (either 3/16" or 1/8", I forget which). -- David L. The Record hub and related parts are quite consistent but as I and others have noted the New Type (Nuovo Tipo) and Gran Sport/Athena/etc fronts use a 3/16" bearing and have pressed (not forged cups) at the smaller diameter. Record parts would be destructive inside his system. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971

Record parts would be destructive inside his system. Although I don't have the parts in front of me, I believe it's quite possible that this may still work. We are talking about finding bearings that will mesh with the surfaces of two toroidal strips. Because the two toroidal strips have a much larger cross-section than the bearing diameter involved, it is quite possible that - as long as the record cones will fit inside the nuovo tipo cups - that a set of bearings, i.e. 9 x 3/16" or 9 x 7/32 or 10 x 7/32 will seat themselves on each part-toroid, and work properly. The bearings might ride a little higher or a little lower on one or both toroids, but they would still rotate and keep the cones and cups from touching each other. - Don Gillies San Diego, CA
