Nope, try again. But I do have to take credit for the prurient tack
this conversation has taken, because I brought up the boner-promoting
aspect of expensive plastic parts.

quoth the dateless moron. /any/ chick costs money. a /lot/ of money if
you count mortgages, cars, clothes, baubles, etc. and when they
reproduce? /that/ is a whole new definition of the word. but you

Fraudulent lying tard has been caught in a lie (again) and now tries to
rationalize it...

Not interested in your sad life experiences, lying fraudtard.

Not interested in your sad bastard kids either.

Damn right you're right. I've never looked at women as "chicks", never
looked at them as costs, and never thought that only women reproduced (they
can't do that by themselves, beamboy). Come to think of it, never needed to
employ hookers for female companionship, either.

C'mon beamboy, you know you were talking about hookers, they're the only
female companionship you can get. Sad that in your old age, this is the
only way you can get it.

When talking with a woman in California, noting her name, I asked if she
was also Italian. She slowly replied "I married one. . . ".

Nah, Italians don't generally reside in trailer parks.

I've never had the bone spacing or the body weight to make do with
racy saddles, even when that meant Selle Italia Turbo or Selle San
Marco Rolls. But I have watched many of my friends heap one thousand
curses on the skinny things that came with their bikes. I was working
in bike shops during the age of the original Flite, and the consensus
on that seemed to be "not as bad as it looks". To me it looked like a
practical joke, though.

Not me specifically (neither my budget nor my wife is that
accommodating), but you have a point there.

Nah, the whole concept of blowing $1300 "on a chick in just one weekend" is
all your statement, beamboy. It's sad that in your old age, the only
companionship you can have is one you have to pay for... but then that's
what you get for being a fraud and a liar, I guess.....

OK, where to start...

"Lasts for years". Cranks, last I checked, were tied with pedals for
the most likely bike parts to suffer significant surface damage. So
the odds of a CFRP crank to last for years of regular use without a
gash, ding, or deep scratch are pretty slim. And once gashed, dinged,
or deeply scratched, you know as well as any of us that a carbon-
plastic crank is an accident waiting to happen.

"Keeps you fit". So the advantage if these $1300 plastic cranks over
a $400 set of hollow forged aluminum cranks, or $150 welded steel
cranks, or $30 cast aluminum cranks, or $10 one-piece cranks is what,
exactly? Remember that the suppository saddle that goes with these
cranks will kill whatever boner you would have gotten from your hawt
plastic bling, so that doesn't count.

but paradoxically, it's not a fatigue initiation nightmare like it is
for aluminum. disruption of the outer surface layers can lead to
delamination and other composite badness, but not necessarily. and most
"carbon" cranks are actually aluminum with a thin [cosmetic?] carbon skin.

"$1,300 for shimano bling that lasts you years and keeps you fit?"

I thought there were some who managed to keep fit with the regular old
forged cranks. That guy in Austin, Texas comes to mind.

When parts are no longer available because Shimano has "walked away".
Octalink BBs are the latest example.

eh? walked away??? from 09/11/2007 11:29 PM, we read mike
jacoubowsky's post titled: "Shimano Octalink road BB future" from which
we learn that: "for a good many years they will continue to manufacture
and supply '105 and DuraAce versions".

how is that "walked away"? do you know other facts to the contrary? is
mike bullshitting? or are you merely voicing supposition?

Geez, ISTM that "$10k+ on a fast motorcycle" is far better value than
$1.3k on a *crankset* for a bicycle.

How do we know it will "last you years"? Given Shimano's history, it's
far more likely it will quickly just become "last year's news" and be
supplanted with a totally different and non-compatible crank.

Cranks don't keep you fit, activity does. Pedalling a crankset 1/20th
the cost is just as effective.

He meant comparing with spending 100k on a car or something.

Remember: Profit = turns x margin. At those margins, a healthy profit
is assured Shimano.

How about just a bike, any bike, that can be had and ridden for
decades that cost 1/2 or so of these cranksa. I thought $1000 for Zipp
cranks was outlandish...so a DA electronic group, with Carbon cranks
and DA carbon wheels...priceless, almost literally.

That makes me hope they fail to recover the cost of their tooling.
But somehow I think they might find enough other willing tools out
there to crank out a profit.

Dear Scott,

Sorry, but we offer no discount for multiple orders.

In fact, there's a 25% surcharge, since we didn't know that a second
bike would required and must order all the separate parts again.

Would you like three?

Cheers,

Dear Carl.
You might want to revise that surcharge of only 25%. If your customer
buys a bike, the unsold bikes increase in rarity and value will increase
correspondently. Your pricing should reflect that ;)

Dear Marten,

We regret to inform our valued customers that increased costs
associated with customer inquiries forces us to charge an additional
12.3% for internet access and clerical overhead.

Please remember that our secretary's tip jar is a vital part of her
retirement plan.

Carl, Don't you think 700C LEW wheels would look odd in a 26" wheel
mountain bike frame? Would they fit? Would you be able to compress
the 135mm rear triangle to fit the 130mm LEW hub? Would the Dura Ace
crank designed for 68mm bottom bracket width fit a presumably 73mm
bottom bracket width on the mountain bike frame? Would the chainrings
clear the chainstays since the mountain bike is designed for smaller
rings and wider Q with a triple crankset?

A good bike mechanic just says "yes, sir" and dives right in.
We're inured to the merely pointless. Impossible can add a few hours.

Dear Russell,

That's why assembly is extra and unspecified--imagine the cost of
fitting all those silly, overpriced parts together.

And imagine the owner explaining how much faster they made him!

Why, we might have to include a salary for a "spin" consultant in the
budget in order to explain the tremendous advantage of the "10%
stiffer" crank, the "damage isolation" of the carbon frame, and the
"special layups for specific rider weights and characteristics" of the
wheels.

A new shade of red is rumored to be available in late 2008, capable of
increasing the speed of financial extraction from wallets by 0.3% in
actual cash register tests.

A $3.99 wicker basket can be attached to the handlebar to reduce the
carbon footprint.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel

Dear Andrew,

Regrettably, we cannot honor coupons from other companies.

However, we are pleased to offer a discount to the trade, so a
two-ounce bottle of Phil Wood bike-bell chime-grease can be added to
your order for only $15.95 instead of the usual $19.95.

Cheers,

I'm more pleased by both the modern green and the old fashioned
utility bikes intended to mobilize people in the third world. When you
see such a simple machine and understand how liberating it will be for
the recipient and that you can get ten of them for the price of those
ridiculous cranks--that sort of puts this whole bike riding thing into
perspective.
