I was browsing old bicycle photos at the Denver Museum online. Some of the descriptions disappointed me, so . . . *** "The secret to riding between railroad tracks is to have kind fellows from RBT fill the spaces between the ties with dirt." http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?20009404+CHS.X9404 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+10205+594+624048645+1+-1 ****** Chalo Colina on a visit to Denver, circa 1900: http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?10018215+X-18215 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+23782+594+623654963+1+-1 *** "Cursed threadless headset!" muttered J. Brandt. "Shall I turn this bicycle upside down for repairs?" http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?10023874+X-23874 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+26340+594+623702495+1+-1 Alternate caption: spoon-brake ejects wheel (and fork). *** For modern bike messengers, here's the real thing: http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?20002366+CHS-L2366 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+25616+594+623616204+1+-1 Only posers fail to button their cardigans. *** Tim McNamara, dictator of low prices: http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?00115581+H-581 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+16335+594+23504+1+-1 *** "Damn your eyes, I say that an apostrophe is just a warning that an 's' is coming! If you dare to complain about the period after 'Shop', I shall plonk you and let you ride alone!" http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?10010874+X-10874 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+31636+594+780935+1+-1 *** "Parla Campagnolo? When you call me that, _smile_! This here's the Peter Chisholm trail-bike repair shop. One more dang sodbuster, and I'm moving to Boulder!" --"The Coloradoan," an unpublished novel by Owen Wister http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?10023875+X-23875 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+16381+594+623702496+1+-1 *** The bike hanging from the ceiling is only $15. The Fisk Quality Anti-Cactus tire costs $4.00, and a guarantee costs another $3.45. (Or maybe the shop is closing out those terrible $4.00 Fisk tires that go flat so easily for only $3.45 each--hurry, supply is limited!) http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?20003422+CHS-X3422 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+13433+594+623644642+6+0 *** "If the artwork on our walls offends you, take your custom elsewhere! This is a red-blooded local bike shop. And no, you may not use our facilities--that chamber-pot is for our overpaid staff." http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?10023876+X-23876 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+23156+594+623702497+1+-1 *** "You think that you have trouble with posers?" http://photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?20003400+CHS-X3400 http://photoswest.org:8080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?fullRecord+23361+594+623645967+1+-1 Cheers, Carl Fogel

All the "photoswest" ones take forever to give only an error message. What am I missing? Jobst Brandt

The long URL will show (with considerably more luck) a thumbnail of the photo with the historic details. I just tried the pair above. The raw photo came up fine, but the longer URL fails, even though it worked a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, the Denver Museum site is frustratingly erratic. Cheers, Carl Fogel

The short links still seem to work. You can still get to the details by copying the call number at the bottom of the picture, clicking on the search, and doing a call-number search, but whatever link you get to the thumbnail-and-detail page will expire. Naturally, I saved all the expiring links in my own favorites, and have to clean them out now. CF
