I occasionally have dreams where I ride like that, and it is a blast!
In reality, I'm scared to do a wheelie...

Those stunts were absolutely amazing. Riding on the railings? Landing
backwards after jumps and having no trouble with it? Unreal. This is
serious acrobatic talent.

I saw a video once where David Belle (big name in Parkour) was
doing moves for a movie.

He ran at a sunken subway entrance with the intent to fly over
the stairs and latch on to a handhold on the other side.

He slipped/missed, hit a stone wall at full stride, and then fell
about 18 feet onto concrete.

Got up laughing, telling the cameraman to be sure to put that in
the movie so people can see that not all moves are successful.

Anybody I know - especially myself - would have woken up in an ER
somewhere.

he had learned how to fall properly, one of the first things
taught in most martial arts, dance, and gymnastics classes.

Dear Pete & Dennis,

One of the first things taught in rec.bicycles.tech is how much fun it
can be to play with physics calculators.

Plug 18 feet into this free-fall calculator:

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/traj.html

I get 34 feet per second, just over 23 mph.

Cheers,

Dear Dennis,

A willing suspension of disbelief might help more than any clothes.

I think I stand corrected.

Finally found the clip and it looks tb less than 18 feet.

Maybe 12?

Also his fall seems tb broken as he bounces off the concrete wall
on the way down.

Forward to 0:55 and you'll see several repeats.

Dear Pete,

I assure you that I've stood corrected about even larger amounts.

:)

Assuming that the railing on the lower right-hand wall near where he
hits is a typical 3 feet above the ground, it looks to be about 8 or 9
feet from parapet to landing.

Next, as you point out, he hits the wall, which absorbs a fair amount
of energy--when two baseballs are thrown from the same pitching
machine with the same force, the one aimed to bounce once half-way to
the target always loses the race. It looks to me as if he crashes into
it about 4 feet up, a bit above the height of the handrail.

Finally, he's not standing on top of the parapet and jumping off with
his center of mass three or four feet above the parapet. He's going
over it in almost a flat dive, producing a much lower effective fall.

But it's still impressive as he whomps into the wall and gets up.
Thanks for digging the video up.

Cheers,

Carl Fogel

That's got some really sick, high speed stuff, and even a nasty fall.

Note: in my old skating/bmx days, the only people I know who could do
the big tricks and not get hurt (no one lands 100%) where the dudes who
were high most of the time. I guess being relaxed helped them take the
falls better (like drunk drivers in wrecks).

Surely the real question is how sticky his tires are. The
manual-to-curved-wallride was most impressive.

Also, note that he doesn't appear to be using a freecoaster, as he seems
to be pedaling out of all of his reverse landings.

No, I believe he's just letting the pedals naturally roll backwards.

Well, yes. Effectively so, as he can't actually be propelling himself
while backwards. The key is that his feet have to move backwards at at
least the speed the cranks are turning or he slows down the bike.

Come to think of it, he may well be "forward-pedal" braking (as opposed
to backpedal...) before he does his little flip to get the bike once
again traveling in the normal, front-wheel-first fashion.

My point is merely that he almost certainly doesn't have a freecoaster,
meaning that his reverse-landing tricks are a tad harder than they have
to be.

But I suppose that's the point.

Yeah, I didn't word my sentence well. It appears to me that that is
exactly what he is doing. Especially since watching the video of the
other guy in the subsequent post on this thread.

Wow. I don't know about the pedals but the riders sure have float. Makes
my attempts to simply ride backwards seem completely and utterly PATHETIC!
