I couldn't resist. I have advertised a Sella Italia Turbo saddle in Bianchi celeste color. I just had a question asked if it was a guys or girls saddle? How does one distinguish between a girls saddle or guy's saddle? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180153268801&sspagename=ADME:X:AAQ:US:11 Thought all Turbo saddles back then were unisex. -tom

Marketing nomenclature only. Some men with upright bars prefer wider saddles just as some women riding in an aero position prefer narrow ones. Saddle shown is a 'Turbo', not the 'Turbo Lady' model. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971

They are generally wider in women than in men to allow the passage of a child's head during birth. With a proper fitting saddle that is correctly adjusted you should be siting on these points and not feeling uncomfortable pressure or numbness in other areas of your posterior or groinal region. There's not much tissue or enervation over these points and they "should" toughen up after a few weeks of riding. Here's what Jobst had to say about it back in 1996: http://yarchive.net/bike/seats.html Avocet is given credit for marketing the first saddles designed for women in the mid 1970s. They had a shorter overall length and wider sitting area in the rear. French and British leather saddle makers were producing saddles anatomically designed for women for perhaps 100 years before Avocet came along ( Carl Fogel can document this). Everyone's anatomy is different so some women can ride comfortably on saddles designed for men and vise-versa. I rode an Avocet women's saddle on my off road bike when they first came out about 1975 or 76. The women's models were available before the men's version. I found that the cheapest men's Avocet model was the best for me on my off road bike. The round top plastic "ass hatchet" seats that came on imported Bike Boom bikes were the biggest deterrent to people riding their bikes. Some guys must like round top saddles but they put "everything" to sleep for me. I tried at least a dozen different saddles during that time including Cinelli Unicanitor, Ideale plastic and leather seats plus others before I got a used Brooks Pro which was perfect for me. I still ride on it. These days I ride Brooks Pros but I've been switching to WBT Pure V saddles with a flat top rear section like a Brooks Pro and a recessed "Love Channel" down the middle. The nose is gel padded which gives junior and the boys a smooth ride. BTW, here's Keith Bontrager's patent for a bike seat: http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5362126-description.html Chas.

That does little for actual comfort of course, but it does allow them to continue hyping bicycle weights, which seems to be their main selling point these days. Ten years from now K. Bontrager will be running with the pack and reintroducing a "classic" seat without any cut-outs or cut-aways, and asking for a patent saying that "it has more surface area to sit on, resulting in improved comfort". ~

The main reason to get a patent today is not protection from having someone steal your idea but to protect the inventor from being sued by someone who gets a patent for a similar idea and markets it. I thought they were too. Tell them it's transgendered and trying to "pass" before the final surgery. Nice saddle! Some Bianchi rider's gonna be thrilled.
