Subject: Help me identify noise ?
Hi all,

Recently I've noticed a somewhat crackling noise when I start pedaling
or pedal hard. It disappears when my cadence rises and my pedal cycle
gets smooth. So basically it only cracks when the torque is high. I've
checked the bottom bracket and although I lack the tools for
disassembling it entirely the bracket and drivetrain/cranks looks to
be rock solid, no lateral motion whatsoever.

It's a relative new bike with only about 1500 miles on it and apart
from this noise everything runs smoothly and works exactly like it
should. It does not appear to affect functionality in any way.

Should I be concerned about this? I generally don't like any noise
whatsoever on a bike so I do try to figure it out and fix it.

thx !

Holy carp! Find a better bike shop- anybody who make you wait for what
could be a minor adjustment (although BB/crank noises sometimes
require exorcism) isn't worth a thing. At worst, they should try to
diagnose it and then give you a drop-off and pick-up time... which
should be the same day for a relatively new bike.

Instead of printing PDF's, try looking over the various instructions
at http://www.parktool.com/repair/ . The very latest Campy cranks are
shown at http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=122#campy

Good lube like already suggested (I like anti-sieze compound suitabl
for the metal(s) involved) and specifications of torque + a good torqu
wrench.
Sometimes just a 1/8 of a turn can make the difference

As long as you can find specs for torque with anti-sieze. If the specs
don't include that factor, you might as well just use the calibrated
hand.

Ok, I've been scared of disassembling my bottom bracket because of all
the sort of locking ring/thread systems etc. It's a bit overwhelming.
Maybe I need to experiment on an old bike and get it sorted out. It
goes without saying my main road bike needs to be out of service as
short as possible. I tend to do all repairs and service myself just
because I dislike waiting and calling the bike shop ;) But I just
dread ruining my gazillion dollar bike.
I guess I need to go tool shopping and print out some Campy manuals.

thx all

Tool shopping? Hammer, old screwdriver/chisel, some big channel locks
and a small pair of vise grips for the stuff under 12mm. That's all
you need!

Noises like this are usually associated with unlubricated threads- not
unusual. As others have said, removing the bottom bracket, greasing
the threads, and reinstalling the BB works most of the time. The
spindle/crankarm interface is another common culprit.

Once I had a bike that drove me crazy with a noise like this. I
rebuilt the crank 3 times before I removed the pedals and greased the
threads there. Problem solved.

Check the clamping bolt on your seat post. It might be just a tiny bit
loose.

This worked for me: If you can't borrow them, get the bottom bracket
removal tool and a crank puller from your LBS - should be < =A330 for
the two.

Pack the bottom bracket threads and the crank spindle with plenty of
'Copper Grease' and then put it all back together again.

Would be worth taking your bike to the shop to make sure you get the
right tools, I got the wrong shaped crank puller and (after an all-
mighty effort) destroyed the end-piece trying to shift the cranks.

Maybe your LBS would take the BB out for you at little or no cost...?
