Subject: Inverted Nipples on Reynolds Solitude Rim?
I'm building a PowerTap SL wheel on Reynolds Solitude rims. Woo-hoo!

So I just got my shipment of DT-Swiss Aero Speed spokes with 1.8mm
nipples. And I just got my Solitude rim, with 2.0mm hex nipples.

Oops ... 1.8mm spokes don't fit with 2.0mm nipples!!!

I've been told you can invert the 1.8mm nipples.

1) Can I?
2) What driver can I use to tension the spokes? The inverted nipple
has a square shape.
3) Should I use inverted nipples, or am I better off spec'ing 2.0mm
spokes for this build?

Thanks!

Andy

I would never slot a hub. There's too much choice out there. In my
case, it was a simple question of having spec'd the wrong DT spoke. I
should've ordered a DT Aerolite spoke ( 2mm thread x 2.3mm x 0.9mm )
vs. a DT Aero Speed ( 1.8mm thread x 2.3mm x 1.2mm ).

The PowerTap SL hub has 2.5mm diameter spoke holes, so the Aerolite
works perfectly, as does the Sapim CX-ray.

So I just ordered the right spokes and that should fix things.

I still maintain the whole problem is with Reynolds' no-spec policy
regarding their wheel components. IF I had known what nipples came
with the rims, I could have spec'd them properly. But getting info
from Reynolds is like pulling hen's teeth. ;-)

The product is great, but the info is missing.

Do you know if Reynolds makes a 1.8mm version of its internal
nipples? Or where
I can find them?

( Reynolds distribution is very poor here in Canada. Hard to get
info, but in fairness, I have
gotten some great answers once I reached the Canadian rep. )

Yes but the notch will dig into the rim-bad thing.

A t handle driver..think QBP has one. I use the one I have for use on
Bora wheels.

Powertap wheel? heavy hub-yes, Want a reliable wheel-right? If you
want to use bladed, make sure they fit into the holes w/o
slotting..Slotting the hub and bye-bye warranty.

A common enough inquiry.

Paid extra for those 'aero' spokes, at some loss of durability, to flail
around in the turbulence behind one's legs?? What?

Reynolds told me that they wouldn't warranty the use of other nipples.
That doesn't mean they won't work just fine of course (with washers),
but I'd suggest talking to them.
