Subject: Jobst "Evil" Brandt slide show
A 15-slide powerpoint presentation appeared in my mailbox, with a note
from Jobst saying that RBT might appreciate the pictures if I
extracted them.

Foolishly, I opened the slide show.

So much for trusting the sender!

Just watching mountaineering shows on the tv makes me uncomfortable.

By coincidence, I took two pictures this afternoon that show how we're
each likely to be reincarnated.

Here's Jobst, soaring but harried:

Here's me, cowering at the thought of the 15 slides that follow:

Locks are one of the things that get left behind as talismans. Longer
lasting than the pieces of cloth that also get tied to anything you
can tie a piece of cloth to at temples and various holy sites. I've
got a great picture somewhere of a shrine on Taishan that can barely
be seen for the number of locks locked to it.

Dear Marian,

Thanks for explaining the odd custom.

It may give a new meaning to Bierce's definition:

LOCK-AND-KEY n. The distinguishing device of civilization and
enlightenment.

Cheers,

The rock doesn't look like Moher to me, but Garry Lee will know much
better than I since I've only see photos of Moher and he'll have been
there.

I've seen those photos referenced regarding a video made by Hans Rey and
somebody else.

Are the other photos from the approach to the old Taoist temple of
Huashan?

Yep. Its Ireland. He did an Irish pub crawl and rode all the top spots with
UK downhiller Steve Pete. It was covered in one of our mags. MBUK I think.
