Please look at the pictures of the S, A, B, C, D link wires about 70% of the way down this Web page: http://sheldonbrown.com/cantilever-geometry.html For quite some time, I have been trying to figure out the purpose of the funnel-shaped object on the left side (but *not* at the end) of each of those link wires. One friend has suggested to me that it is a handle to use when removing the cable to widen the brakes and remove the wheel. This seems reasonable to me, except that I have never found the need to use it that way! So, I'd like to know what others think. To reply directly to me, replace all 'z' with 'a' in email address.

Prior to loopy links the ends had a trapezoidal 'handle' on the outside, where it could possibly disturb airflow, catch on vegetation offroad or even look like a not-Shimano-enhanced product. Either style works. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971

George, I grasp it to unhook the end of the cable from the brake arm when removing the wheel. Kerry
