Subject: Looking for Suntour Freehub Body and Advice
Hi All,

I'm encountering a perplexing problem. Ever since I
built up my rear wheel on a Sansin sealed-bearing
tandem hub with a Suntour cassette, the wheel has been
making "Thunk, thunk, thunk" sounds intermittently.
The noises generally happen when I am in the middle
cogs, not the big or little ones.

The hub has a sealed cartridge bearing on the
non-drive side and standard steel balls in the race on
the freehub body. The hub mates to a seven speed
Suntour freewheel, such as model CS-APOQ-K7U (or it
could be "CS-APOO-K7U").

Yesterday, I replaced the cartridge bearing on the
non-drive side. The "thunk, thunk, thunk" sound
remained unchanged. Today I removed the inner sealing
plate behind the freehub body, but once again no
change in symptoms.

My only remaining thoughts are:

A: It's a lousy fit between the interfacing splines
on the hub and the freehub body.

B: There's something wrong with the freehub body.

In either case, I'd like to try a new freehub body.
Anyone got one for sale?

Have any of you had similar issues with Suntour hubs?
How'd you solve them.

This problem is making me very grouchy. I am sure my
family will send many, many thanks to anyone who can
help me solve it.

Thanks!!

I think I understand what you are saying. My setup definitely has a
bolt holding the cassette body to the hub shell, if I get what you are
saying. I disassemble it with a 10mm allen wrench, which I insert
through the axle-hole after having taken out the axle. I loosen the
bolt, and the freehub body comes off.

Do you know which models are bolted? Do they all fit to the same hub
interface?

Thanks,

I'm sorry. Let me try again.
Some cassette bodies, Shimano, Suntour & others, are pressed on the
hubshell. The joint fails.

Get a model that's bolted together, a later Shimano (FH-7400, FH-6207 or
newer) or a better Suntour (XCPro, Superbe, others?)which has a bolt
holding the cassette body to the hub shell.

Thanks for the reply. I've already fully disassembled it a couple
times. The hub/cassette body interface looks solid. The hub splines
are machined. The cassette body looks like a cast unit. Is that the
interface you are talking about?

Someone suggested that Suntour freehub bodies are prone to this
problem. Anyone know if some Suntour freehub bodies are more robust
that others?

Thanks,

Forbes

That is the exact problem with lack of 'robustness'. They fall apart.
Other Suntour models are bolted together which works better, lasts longer.

Shimano famously had the same problem, changed to a bolted cassette body.

Several early cassette hubs (and some modern off-brand) have a stamped
joint between cassette body and hubshell. Disassemble enough to see if
that is the problem; If it is, start looking on ebay. . .
