Subject: Old 8-sp Shimano XT M-737 Disc-brake compatible?
I'm rebuilding my older mountain bike and am thinking of switching from
canti's to discs, since I'm moving to a new set of wheels in the process.

Does anyone know if this series of shifters has enough pull for something
like the Avid BB7 mechanical discs? Or would I need to use the road version
of the brake?
I'd rather use the mountain version if possible, in case I upgrade my
shifters at a later date.

Thanks,

-pete

BB7s need the same cable pull as V brakes. If you've got V brakes now,
your levers will work fine with BB7s. Otherwise you'll need the road
version or new brake levers.

If the "old" bike had cantilevers, then the brake levers have less
pull and more leverage than the new "V-brake" levers. You should
probably go with the "road" disc brakes to insure compatibility.
