Velonews has an article on a guy named Jon Baker who is heading over to
live the dream by racing cyclocross in Europe.

Super duper, but the part we care about is that he has some fairly
clever-looking adjustable canti brakes:

http://velonews.com/view_full.php?image=/images/report/13487.20991.f.jpg
http://velonews.com/tech/report/articles/13487.0.html

The article explains the nearly self-evident details of how it was done,
including the fact that rbt favourites Vecchio's helped construct them.

Tidy!

I use the Jagwire version. You can get them at bikeman.com which is
great for cross stuff in general.

I used to use Time, and switched to Egg Beaters for the weight and
supposed mud clearing advantages. Both work great. For me, their
greatest advantage is fool proof releases, no matter how dirty they
are. Last week, I built a new cross bike for my wife (pretty orange
Salsa) and finally talked her into switching from SPDs to the Egg
Beaters after years of lobbying.

Your wife is very wise. On a pure cost-basis, I continue to tout SPDs
(or compatible clones) as the best value in clipless, UNTIL ONE STARTS
RIDING CYCLOCROSS. At which point the SPDs pack with crap and piss you
off.

After doing two seasons of 'cross, and realizing it will probably be the
last form of racing I give up, I promptly switched my main bikes to
Crank Bros pedals.

Jon Baker has been a top rider in CO for years. It's great to see him
do the Belgian thing. Here's a picture I took of him several years
ago:
http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.php?id=photos/2003/oct03/XilinxCX/21xlnx_cross_102603_21

The cable adjuster is cool and looks very light, but I prefer my own
solution for ease of use:

Peter has rebuilt the shifters on this bike.

My CX bike has 'cross levers, with integrated adjusters. I use those as
my primaries. But yes, that generic mid-cable adjuster (Nashbar?) is
nice. I have a set in The Pile that I bought just in case.

As an aside, maybe the Time users will disagree, but aren't Egg Beaters
just the best thing to happen to CX since 8-speed cogsets?

Gotta love a guy who names his son Axel. Who does he think he is?

Unless the frame doesn't have the ability to have 'standard' housing
stops, particularly on the front brake cable stop.

Was that the circumstance? I assumed this was so you could adjust the
straddle cable length (changing mechanical advantage) separate of the
brake cable length (not changing mechanical advantage).

So Peter Chisholm gets to glue tubulars to CFRP wheels? ;)

Any brake adjuster on a cantilever changes the mechanical advantage.
That's why you should adjust for wear by advancing the pads up their
shafts.

A high profile cantilever is designed to set up at 90 degrees at pad
contact. That way is doesn't matter how long the straddle cable is.
The cable adjuster is just to take the slack out of the set up if you
didn't clamp it exactly. The adjuster is tidy, but it's no different
that the standard housing stop solution...

IMO, that is why you don't see that very useful feature on production
cantis: it can be dangerous in the hands of the uninitiated.

Nifty!

Nonetheless, I'd be afraid of the uninitiated using such a thing like
it was a regular brake adjuster, not realizing that they're also
adjusting their mechanical advantage while adjusting the pad-to-rim
distance.
