TREK has, at times in the past, made some very bone-headed choices for rims, esp. regarding heat-treated rims. I own a TREK 500 (1985) and when I moved to pothole-strewn central illinois for graduate school, a pothole destroyed my original rear rim, and the LBS replacement ($50, installed) lasted only about 3 months before another pothole destroyed it. So I paid $60 for a pair of bike nashbar WHEELS ($12 shipping or something, miche hubs), and they worked great for a decade until the nipples started to pull through ... still, they worked but i had to use silicone to stop the nipples from 'ping'ing as I rode... If you find a 10%-off coupon on the web, this wheelset might be a decent deal, at $150/set : http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=6000131&subcategory=60001197&brand=&sku=16082&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Shop%20by%20Subcat%3A%20Road%20Wheels%20%2D%20Pairs As recently as a few weeks ago, Nashbar was offering wheelsets for $120 or less, *sigh*. I am finding less and less interesting bicycle stuff at Nashbar lately. - Don Gillies San Diego, CA

adding to that-sometimes nbar's forecast is so bleak, stock so low, frequent buyers and would be buyers in extremis begin wailing of nbar's death

Universal cycles, not in the nashbar buy low sell high snake oil mail odor market but just plain selling parts sells out by summer's end then restock for xmas goes low in Fenruary stocks in March April sells January $75 part for $100 in June.... you see if you buy a huge number of 27" velocity double wall rim wheelsets ther's a disocunt but ya gotta buy early to stock. getting rid of 20% of that load ASAP pays the first bills then the price is raised to show a profit over the summer longh haul bet accordion leee!
