Subject: Removing BB races? Without Proper Tool?....
|
I have a cruiser bike (BMX 1-piece cranks) and can't get the BB bearing races out. I knocked on them a bit from the inside but gave up because they were just getting dinged and they weren't moving. I am taking it to a shop anyway, but is there any way to do this non-destructively without the actual tool? The headset bearing races came out just by tapping them a bit from the opposite end with a metal rod and hammer. I know you need the tools to put them /back/ /in/, but that wasn't the problem today..... ~

There's no "actual tool" in this case. You might try to figure out a small chunk of wood that you could get in there that could hit two opposite sides of the race at once. Or just figure out a way of using a small wood block as a punch. Or if you haven't yet tried a really broad punch, that would be good. On the bright side, if the BB does get messed up, even the nicest one available, the Odyssey Dynatron, is still really cheap.

Friction fit as far as I know. http://parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=92 You can install using a large c-clamp and some blocks of wood.
