Paranoia has struck me again. The fixie has become my daily training
bike and has received the holy transplant of my beloved Unicanitor
clone, a Selle Royal Prestige. Ahhhhh. I thought the Velo brand WTB
copy was fine till I tried riding over 25 miles with it. Sit bones
fine, but taint was yeeewaaawwah! The Prestige is like a Brooks Pro,
without break in or rivets in the way. Purrrfect.

So when I break a rail--is the only classic flat well shaped, and firm
saddle choice a San Marco Rolls? I did a bit of fingerwork a while
back and that's what the deal seems to be. Not a bad choice, but
curious if I'm overlooking any other options for when the emergency
arises.

We have stopped selling just about every saddle except for Fizik,
Arione Brooks and Aliente. Not stocking SSM, SI, and Terry but
everybody 'seems' to want the Fizik ones right now. Neither suit me.
Been using Rolls for lots of years, have 4 spares, am glad they are
still making them.

Brooks saddles (Pro, B-17, Swallow, sprung saddles)

San Marco Rolls
San Marco Regal
San Marco Concor Sette Zero (250g Ti just-reissued early 1980's saddle.)

It's interesting to note that with an order as small as 25 saddles,
San Marco will do custom colors / tops on these saddles. Richard
Sachs (www.richardsachs.com) sells red smooth-leather regal saddles.
I have in my garage a flame-red suede Rolls saddle, just produced
2 months ago as part of a special-order to San Marco. You can mix and
match to hit the 25 saddle limit (i.e. a few normal rolls & regals
plus 10x blue-suede Sette Zeros would probably do-ya!)

In my opinion, here is the only a few classic saddles that remain to
be reissued :

Selle Italia Turbo
Avocet Racing II or Racing I.

There is no need to bring back any other classic design as most of
them were hors*****.

Why do you blank out hors de combat? Because it is French?

As the name says, 7-0, or saddle of the 70's, and as the company notes, the
rebirth of the original Concor (which I loved to ride for 2 saddles over 13
years).

But if the OP is looking for a flat saddle, this one is the wrong choice.
It is much closer to a hammock than a table top.

It came stock, I didn't check the base for the actual manufacturer
before I tossed it. It also had "vanity springs" so it looked like the
base from a Flyer grafted to a Regal top. I can just imagine the
designer combining the two in p-shop and faxing to the Taiwanese
saddle manufacturer. It was on their Nexus 7 bike from '98--so I guess
they were going for Euro-classy, but they missed the 19th century, and
emulated the (taint) Inquisition instead.

I wasn't expecting a kind of Spanish Inquisition!

What was the source of the clone?

/slaps forehead

I had a Marin that came with a clone of a Regal about 8 years ago.
D'oh. It had a very arched top that basically put pressure right down
the center of your bits. I replaced it with a B17 as an overreaction--
far better, if not perfect (for me).

Years ago went through cycling inquisition with round top plastic saddles.
Tried Unicanitor with and without padding, plastic Ideale with and without
padding, Ideale leather and others. All had the same result, "sleepy
winky", pain and discomfort up the middle and so on.

About 1976 one of our local racers hung it up and traded in his road bike
for a 3 speed. I grabbed his Brooks Pro (with his permission) and started
riding it. The saddle already had a lot of miles on it and it's still the
most comfortable seat I have.

Last year I bought a WTB Pure V saddle for my MTB. The gel in my 1992
Avocet had turned to mush.

This series of WTB saddles has a "love channel" down the middle and gel
padding in the nose. The back is flat and the padding in that area is
firm. This is the next best thing to a Brooks Pro for those of us who like
leather.

http://www.wtb.com/saddles_purev.html

The padding in the rear of several other WTB (cheaper) models is a little
too soft and I sink in too much which brings back the old discomfort
problems.

On a related issue, I've seen a lot pictures of older bikes (eBay and
classic bike sites) with the nose of the saddle pointing upward. I've
found that I have to modify most seatposts to get the nose down on bikes
with relaxed seat tube angles ~72°. I wonder if this could be a problem
for some riders who haven't figured out a way to get their seat
comfortably adjusted.

Chas.

Yeah, the rivets....:::sigh::: Seems San Marco had aspirations to
emulate a tensioned leather saddle using 'modern' naterials. Early on,
they had a saddle that was just that: 'tensioned plastic' (no rivets,
though). Never rode one, so no comment. The early incarnations of the
Regal did have a tension adjustment, too, but it was later eliminated.
I think the rivets are a "legacy" thing.

Anyway, a Regal might be worth a sit.

Hmmm....my comment was that many people who were comfortable on the
Rolls seemed to like the feel of the Regal, too. Your Pelvis May Vary.

Another saddle - the San Marco ERA. Flat, skinny, looks daunting, but I
rode one on a borrowed bike, once, at it was fine. I just don't like the
sliding thing you get with flat saddles.

Then you should try Fizik's Alienté. It works perfectly for me after
15 years on San Marco's now discontinued "Strada".

Fizik's in general are getting rave reviews. I have a friend who rode
Selle Italia Turbo and Turbomatic for years, tried a Fizik (Arione I
think) and loves it.

Yeah, that's why I said "in general" -- they are getting rave reviews
even about very different saddles.

You wanted flat and the Regal is not that. Rolls a great saddle, been
