Subject: SH-50 or SH-51 cleats with PD-M959 pedals?
My parts bin contains some SH-50 and SH-51 cleats, which are quite
different in the detailed shape of both front and rear engagement
parts. It looks as though the SH-50 would provide some float. On
Sheldon Brown, there doesn't seem to be any distinction between the
two.

Am I right about the float, or is there some other functional
difference between these cleats?

I'm going to swap out the unsuitable SH-55 cleats on my spare shoes so
I can use them with the PD-M959 pedals on my touring bike, on which I
currently use SH-51 cleats. Given that I don't crave float, do I stick
with the SH-51, or is there a reason to try the SH-50?

Then why not just use their posting handle? You know, the one they
posted under.... Try it: "John Doe wrote:"

What a steaming pile of bullshit. Does that kind of crap fly in

What is it that you *are* trying to imply? And why do they, or anyone
else, need "the benefit of [your] doubt"? Why mention it at all? Why
do you make a big deal of a poster's 'anonymity' on Usenet?

You are in the bike biz, trying to make a sale or two along the way.
Anonymity would hardly serve your purposes, would it?

The pretense of not understanding the difference between using a handle and an
attempt at anonymity is the annoying bit. Pretty well everyone knows who the
regulars are and there's no hiding being done. Just a bit of fun on the
internets.

The thing is that if I'm going to quote somebody, I like to be able to
provide attribution.

If I don't know who wrote the message I'm replying to I still need
something to make it clear that it's a quotation.

I use the "shy person" attribution to give the originator the benefit
of the doubt, not to imply that the "shy person" is necessarily a
craven coward or a paranoiac.

I have not found this to be the case.

The worst I've had along this line are the occasional flames on
newsgroups, but I can live with that.

The SH50 is the no float model. The 51 has some float. Either will
work in the 959.

This may come as a shock, but pretty much *no one cares* if, for
example, you are really "Tom Sherman" or even if "Tom Sherman" really
exists.

You have bought hook, line and sinker into the "John who?", "John Doe
anonomously sniped" and (my very fave), "a shy person wrote" bullshit.

Given some of the nutballs on the 'net, people without boundaries who
will stalk and harass via email, snail mail, telephone, etc., there is
good reason for folks to be reticent about full disclosure and, note
this well, pretty much *no reason* to make such disclosure here on
Usenet.

Of course, forgeries, etc., are another case entirely.

I'm surrounded by a quarter million of the 'loony left' here. Tom is at
least literate and occasionally humorous. In Madison, his views would be
considered very much right of center. Hell, al qaeda could do 'fund

Andrew Muzi could tell you what brand of European commuter bike one of
my relatives rides, since he sold said bike a couple of years ago.

I see her riding the other direction most afternoons on my way to the
Post Office. Didn't connect the 'Shermans' until now.

It's amazing how lame some people can be, ain't it? Especially with

That would be difficult, but not as difficult as being less credible

BTW, snarky/snarkier/snarkiest works better than snarky/more snarky/
most snarky.

Which is the real fake "jim beam" and which is the fake fake "jim beam"?

There are several people here who post from multiple sources, and
getting access to a news-feed based in a foreign country is only a
credit card validation away.

since you already have them, why don't you just try them out yourself?

As far as I know, here's the deal on these cleats. I prefer the
multi-release with a tiny bit of float. I would take multi-release with no
float but I'm not sure the design is possible.

SM-SH50 no float
SM-SH51 float
SM-SH55 float and multi release.

I don't think any of the Shimano cleat/pedal combos will float much more
than 4-6 degrees but I could be wrong.

The confusion enters the picture when different pedal/cleat combos slightly
change the float characteristics due to the actual clamp profile/design. I
ride with the 959s and the SH55 cleat. This combination works great for me
on my XC bike.

I hope this helps?

Andrew.

Thanks. Glad the controversial SH-55/M959 combo is working out for
you, I find it prone to inadvertent release off road, though I suppose
this is less likely on my touring bike anyway. I think I'll give the
SH-50 a try for a while
