Subject: Source for nice fat 27" slicks?
Hello All:

One of my bikes has 27" wheels and I would really like to find some nice
fat slicks for it. Something similar to the Conti Sport Contact (for
reference see
http://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30&action=details&sku=TR9319).

Anyone know where might find something like that?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

i missed the fact that the op wanted something fatter when i suggested
serfas secas before... they are actually about the worst example of
the actual size being way smaller than the listed that i've ever seen.
they're about 26mm inflated.

i think that michelin world tours may be a bit wider than 32mm
inflated, not 100% sure though.

Oh, well. They work alright for me, but I am not looking
for anything particularly fat or skinny; rather vague
on the matter. I value slick tread and thin sidewalls.

Thanks to all of you who have responded. I have followed up on your
various suggestions and I am getting the sense that the largest tire
available in 27" is going to be a 27 x 1 1/4. I really wish I could get
something closer to 26x1.6" Conti's I have on a tandem (I incorrectly
linked to the 26x1.3 version in the original post). What I really want
is tire that rolls nicely, turns nicely, and is fat enough to act as
cushy suspension.

Soooo.... looks like if I want fat and smooth I'll need to switch out to
700c wheel set. Easy enough I guess but I wanted to keep the touring
bike in original trim.

Any possibility there is a big fat smooth 27" tire out there that no one
has mentioned yet? I have contacts in UK and Australia so they don't
necessarily need to be available in the US.

Thanks again,

Jim

to be serious for a moment.

so, at the end of the road, the answer to your question is
there are no more tires. nada.
the tires you ask about were made 15 to 20 years ago then warehoused.
the supply began to thin out 7 years ago.
the reason is right in back of you.
I have a similar problem with the car I keep - no more SP 44 Dunlops.
Gone.
So I went to look for new rims to fit 185mm, and hahaha the rims were
gone.

27-inch hasn't been common on new bikes since abut 1985. Sure, you can
buy a tire, about a dozen or so models yet, just not everything imaginable.

Michelin dropped the VR series speed-rated tires for Corvair rims too. A
mere 30 some years and they walked away. Go figure.

So the rabid squirrels bite tires, while the non-rabid variety just jump
into the spokes?

Agreed. I have a pair of the non-belted (i.e., Prima) 27 x 1 1/4 on my
"mule". I rode tis bike on some 30+ milers in the spring, including
quite a bit of dirt and gravel. The tires seem quite satisfactory.
Unfortunately, some people confuse high priced goods with quality
goods. The Cheng Shins are cheap, but good quality.

"The best goods are necessarily expensive; the reverse isn't
necessarily true."

Are you sure the tires are the source of your dis-satisfaction?
"Feeling comfy" might just be over-inflation. "Turn nicely"? Meaning
what? If they feel "squirrelly", that might be over-inflation, too.

Some of the Cheng Shin tires are quite decent, IMO/E. They also make
"private label" tires for others; the Serfas Seca tires recommended
earlier in this thread are one example.

The Panaracer Pasela comes in 27". It is a nice smooth riding tire.
It's not a slick but the tread is really more minimal than it appears.

BEFORE yuo drift away...
buying a gator or spec turbo before thinking toward a set of 700c's
what are you on now?
economy class or the $30+ rubber? that's the DM
if you're on economy then an aramid belt Gator with a Specialized
thorn proof tube or a Spec Turbo with ditto
could be just the ticket. the Gator doesn't have the buns of a
Citysport but it'll go if you don't know from a Chang Sue.
Then you could wait to pounce on a mail order set of Velocity 700c's
from like Nashbar on sale in February (but maybe not this february,
190 billion goes a looooong way) for what? $100?

These days I ride the Michelin karbon 700x25 on my regular road bike. I
find that they give the best combination of handling and wear. On my
commuter bike I ride 26 x 2" slicks which are very comfy. My tandem has
mtb wheels and I use the 26x1.6 Conti Sport Contact. Those are comfy,
feel fast, and turn nicely.

The touring bike in question currently wears Chen Shen 27 x 1 1/4 that
are almost exactly the same width as my Michelin 700 x 25. They do not
feel comfy nor do the turn nicely. This whole thread is my attempt to
find a tire that will allow me to commute as comfortably on this bike as
on my current fat-tire commuter.

Thanks,

Jim

what width fits bewteen the stays?

your gonna get what you pay for here. if the Conti, a 3 ply aramid
(kevlar) carcass, costs $29-35 then the Schwalbe at a similar price,
recently upgraded in and by an Asian factory with a German name.,
could come in with similar standards
it's probably not as lively as a Conti. Conti's with that round shape/
carcass design gets grip grip grip as the bike gets laid over in a
turn, a Schwalbe might, the Michelin may not, the Pasela's have very
weak sidewalls, and the low cost tires are low cost tires meant for
the middle class in Myanmar or Calcutta not sophisticated wanna be
road racers like you (and me).

The Conti Gatorskin is less of a commuter and more of a road racer
tthan the Citysport. Conti is fairly precise in designing and
marketing each Conti design for each grade application. So if you
wannabe road race, the Gator is fast but not as durable by far as the
Citysport, Sport! and you could end up bitchin about it on RBT like
several other folk.

I'm surely not a Continental tire expert but I recently replaced a
newish one, 26x1.75, rent with a classic 'cotton casing' starburst right
in the tread center.

I was explaining to the customer how unusual that is today, how we
almost never see that failure (which was common in our youth) because
modern tires are nylon casing, not cotton.
Further inspection showed it to be a coarse cotton casing marked
"Continental Made in India". Definitely not recommended.

True slicks are increasingly scarce in the obsolescent 27" size.
Harris Cyclery has a couple. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/tires/630.html

I can say from experience that while it isn't slick, the Michelin
World Tour 27x1-1/4" tire is not only one of the fattest 27" tires
I've tried, but also one of the fastest.

Or the Michelin Word Tour 27 which is quite ample, about 38mm.

That's a 32mm tyre, which hardly counts as fat, but if a 32 is what
you want there's a Conti Ultra Gator Skin 32-630

or Conti Ultrasport 32-630

I used a pair of cheap and cheerful Vittoria Zaffiro 27"x1 1/4" tires
on my utility bike last year. They roll nice, and never managed to
puncture. $13. The tread is about an inconsequential as a herringbone
pattern, they feel like slicks.
