Subject: Spoke nipples and spoke spanners

I have an el cheapo spoke spanner
http://members.pcug.org.au/~rcook/images/spoke-spanner.jpg (26 kbs)

The slots are numbered 9 (largest)-15, presumably a gauge numbering system

The 14 slot is a nice fit for a 0.126" (3.2 mm) nipple

But the 13 slot doesn't fit any of my remaining nipples properly. Most of these are 0.134" (3.4 mm on the front wheel) but on the back wheel, some go down to 0.131" (3.3 mm)

Sheldon Brown has no info on this (he probably does but I can't find it) so does anyone know the gauge numbers 9 - 15 are about?

TIA

Owen

Gauge 13 nipples like 13 spoke wheels were found to be unlucky and
were rapidly discontinued hence they are rarely found in the
secondhand market!

In the absence of any other replies, I'll kick the discussion
off with my understanding.

The numbers refer to spoke gauges (at the thread - butted spokes
don't have uniform gauge over their length). Decades ago, 15
gauge spokes seemed to be the standard, and I sometimes had
difficulty finding thicker 14 gauge for my touring bikes. Now
14 gauge seems to be the norm. And the spoke nipple dimensions
change with the spoke gauge.

I guess the larger spanner sizes are for other types of spoked
wheels (non-bicycle).

There's some information in Sheldon's glossary under "gauge":
